Liverpool Ship Arrivals
« on: Friday 13 January 12 19:33 GMT (UK) »

Not sure if this is the right space for this query - please redirect if somewhere better ;)

I am trying to find out which ship would have arrived from Canada - probably departing Montreal or Quebec 16th-20th September 1871.   The only clue I have is a report from the time saying the journey was on an 'Austrian steamer.
The outward journey to Halifax, Nova Scotia was on the SS Peruvian which departed Liverpool 11th August 1871 arriving 9 days later on 20th August.

I'm guessing therefore that the return ship would also have landed at Liverpool between 25th-30th September.

Does anyone have any suggestions where I could trace such information?

Craggs - Bishop Auckland, Darlington & Byker
Hutchins & Lewins- Sunderland
Miller, Allan & Brunton - Walker & Byker
Bagnall - Watermen of the Ouseburn

If anyone can find any info on the Canada departure/passenger list that would be equally valuable

I have just found a list of steamships of the Allan Line and realised that they are all -ian ships named after countries - and so the 'Austrian' steamship mentioned is the name of the ship itself rather than its nationality.

So now I need to find a date from which itr sailed from Quebec to Liverpool.

and a passenger list ideally!?

I think I may have found it ...nearly ;)

Times October 2nd 1871 Ship News QUEENSTOWN  (presumably Queenston, Ontario, Canada)

October 1st: The Allan mail steamer Austrian arrived from Halifax at 6.30 pm. She landed all the mails and proceeded immediately for Liverpool.

There's a later report saying it did the same again on October 15th -

Times October 16th 1871
QUEENSTOWN October 15th
The Allan mail steamer Austrian arrived here at 9.50 am today and, having landed all the mail and some passengers, proceeded immediately for Liverpool.

Sounds like the one you are after would have been the one that stopped at Queenstown about 2 weeks previous to these...

Unfortunately - I can't see any more entries for it....but it builds a bit more of a picture of the journey.

The Government of Canada did not keep records of people leaving the country; there are no passenger lists for departures from Canadian ports.
The UK incoming passenger lists are  (as far as I know)  not available before 1878.

Suggest you try Liverpool Maritime Museum.

There is some info on the Austrian here (and a picture) - although it only has the outbound from Liverpool not return journey.

Thanks all.

RMS Austria route info and photo v interesting

Assuming 7-8 day passage Quebec-Liverpool there's just about enough time for:

D Liverpool 25/8  A Quebec 9/9
week in port

D Quebec 16/9  A Liverpool 23/9??  - though not recorded
D Liverpool 24/9  A Halifax 1/10??   - to get back for next recorded departure from Queenstown/Quebec

D Quebec 2/10  A Liverpool  10/10
D Liverpool 11/10   A Halifax 20/10

quite an alarmingly fast turnaround - perhaps normal for a mail ship?

I guess the other option is that they used the Austrian to travel only from Quebec to Halifax, and then caught another steamship for the Halifax-Liverpool journey.

So there may well be a sailing of another steamship D Halifax ~20/9 for Liverpool arriving 1/10

which would make for a less hectic time schedule  ???

I think the 23rd September arrival date looks good too - but I couldn't find a report for Queenstown departure or arrival in Liverpool 23rd.

I think they did do pretty fast turnaround and a week would be plenty of time

Hi

Are you sure that the Queenstown named is not Ireland? It was a major port for emigrants and many transatlantic ships called in there on the way to and from Liverpool.
