WATERS, Shalbourne Wilts/Berks look up
« on: Monday 16 January 12 19:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'd appreciate any information on the parents, siblings and marriage of Job WATERS b. +/- 1806 Shalbourne Wilts/Berks, d. unknown in ZA.  The only information I have, is the 1841 census records.

Thanks!

To save us all checking out the 1841 census can you tell us what info you have please?  For instance wife's name (if you want us to look for his marriage).

1841 doesn't normally give place of birth, have you found him in later censuses?  If not, what makes you so certain of his place of birth?

best wishes
Jane

1841 census (HO107, 21, 22/8, 10) has his wife as Mary, but her age is indecipherable.

I am assuming that mala1972 is still looking for this info and that KGarrad has identified the right family.

On that basis, a*******y has him transcribed as John and wife's age as 25.  4 children up to the age of 7.  I'll look for a Shalbourne marriage in the early 1830s and for his baptism in the range 1800-1810.

Hi mala1972

I checked the Shalbourne PRs for you today at WSRO.

bap 14 Oct 1810 Jobe s/o Samuel & Sarrah WATERS

I checked the marriage index for the parish and no Job/Jobe/John WATERS was married between 1830 and 1837, when the index runs out.  So I checked FreeBMD, because as the index ran out so civil registration started, and although there was no Job or Jobe, I found two John WATERSes marrying in Hungerford district (which covers Shalbourne) in 1838 and 1839.  The 1838 one possibly married a Mary (shared ref).  There was no Mary sharing the 1839 ref.  So I checked the Shalbourne registers for 1838 and found him, but he didn't marry a Mary after all.

3 Dec 1838 John WATERS ofa b lab otp father Samuel WATERS, lab & Ann CLARAGE ofa sp lab father Ezekiel CLARAGE, lab, after banns, wits Charles WILLIS, John TARRANT, all marked ex wit 2 who signed and looks as if he's probably a "professional witness" as he witnesses a lot of marriages.

So I've not found Job's marriage, but it seems he might have had a brother John.  Do you have baptisms for John and for Job's children (just in case Job and John are one and the same person).  It may be that the woman sharing his home for the 1841 census was not his wife.

Jane :-)

Hi, Jane

Thanks for your feedback.  The Death Notice record for his son, Charles (born in "Berkshire, England") and the baptism record of his daughter Emily (born in ZA), state Job's wife as Mary.  Job, his wife and 5 children emigrated to South Africa on the ship Zenobia in 1850, that's why there aren't any census records since 1841.  A few more Waters' (William, wife and child; Charles and Tomas) arrived on the same ship, I'm sure they would have been related.

Regards,

Marius :)
