Hi

Lancashire is a big place and there are a lot of John Bell's so whereabouts in Lancashire was he born

Have you checked freebmd for a birth for him or the IGI for any baptism?

Did he have any siblings?

Who and when did he marry?

What census do you have him on?

What was his fathers occupation on his marriage cert

What were the names of the witnesses on the marriage cert - anybody called Bell?

Hi I have looked for him on index's but came up with nothing. I have his marriage record, he was married to Mary Hughes 5/17/1880 in Prestwich. I have him in a few census from Massachusetts, I've seen several John Bells in England but since I don't know his mothers name it's hard to tell. There are two witnesses to their marriage, a Robert Bell and a Elizabeth Morris. He lived at 22 Thompson St, Cheetham, his dads name was John as well and he was a property owner. It looks like Johns profession was a printer.

I'm not really sure if Catherine is his mothers name.  I was hoping that was him and his family but until I have something like his birth record I really don't know. I have his death record and just his fathers name is mentioned, mothers was blank, thanks for your help!

On freebmd there are only 2 John Bell's registered around the right time in Lancashire

Dec 1858
Bell    John        Ulverstone    8e   535
Bell    John Richardson        Preston    8e   440

None registered first quarter 1859
One in Chorlton 2d quarter 1859 but that would be too late.

I think the two from Dec 1858 are accounted for in later census.

Perhaps he didn't know where or when he was born when he did his naturalization papers. Or he wasn't registered as John? Possibly that was a nick name or middle name?

At this point anything is possible LOL I've seen a few papers that say he was born in Ireland. I've had good luck with the Hughes side but continue to strike ou with the Bells, thanks for answering!

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
