Parish Abbreviation KNT - COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 18 January 12 05:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have just found a marriage record on Family Search and Find My Past.  The marriage was in 1819 at Doddington, Northumberland.  The groom's parish is recorded as KNT.

What parish does KNT stand for?  I haven't done a lot in Northumberland so I have no idea what this is.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I did google KNT but didn't get anything conclusive.

Kirknewton does sound feasible.

Is that in the proximity of Doddington and Wooler?

Thanks,

Debbie

 Debbie,

You post pricked my curiosity as I dabble in Northumberland's parishes and the only times I have encountered abbreviated names for the parishes is in modern transcriptions.

The Durham Bishops Transcriptions ( on FamilySearch) for Doddington show that Mary Straughan " of this parish" married Andrew Tait "of the parish of Kirknewton" on 27th May 1819.

So gortonboy was spot on !

Witnesses were James Tait and John ( surname difficult to read- Straker/Straughan *)

There was another marriage in Doddington Parish church that same day. An Isabella Straughan married James Heslop, both of Doddington parish, with witnesses William Tait and John ( ?? Straker/Straughan*)

Theses marriages were on Image 91 of 322.

*Like Tait, Straughan was a surname centred around Northumberland. The spelling of Straughan varied to include Straffen etc.

Hi Michael,

You were spot on with that marriage.  That is the one I was looking at.  It has taken me quite some time to find as the only reference I ever had to the bride was her name Mary Straphin off her daughter's Scottish death certificate.  With the various spellings and me not having a clue it is no wonder it has taken me a while.

I will definitely have to have another look at this family as you have mentioned a couple of Taits and Straughans for me to follow up.  It wouldn't be unrealistic to think two sisters married on the same day.

Thanks for your help and advice.
