Carroll, Patrick died 31/3/1898 Coroners Inquest
« on: Wednesday 18 January 12 09:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have discovered through PRONI that there was a coroner's inquest into the death of Patrick Carroll of Tievecrom Forkhill.  Place of death was North St Newry.  Date of death was 31/3/1898.    PRONI gives a reference of ARM/6/1/1/10/23 but when I enter that reference it returns with no records found.

Are there any PRONI gurus out there that might be able to drill down to that reference, or alternatively know of other publications where Coroner Inquest findings might have been published for Armagh in 1898?

Many thanks.

The inquest was reported in the Belfast Newsletter of 2 April 1898- do you have the article?

Thank you for this.  I thought it would be relatively simple to locate the Belfast Newsletter article, but easier said than done.  Any of the sites that I can locate for the Newsletter have all been password protected.  If you can shed any light on the circumstances of the inquest, I would be very greatful.

Inquest at Newry.- Yesterday Mr. John Francis Small, solicitor, coroner for South Armagh, held an inquest in the Ballybot Courthousem Newry, touching the death of Patrick Carroll, T_rev_crum, near Forkhill, which took place under sad circumstances, on the 31st ult. Deceased, who was about seventy-five years of age, came to Newry on the day in question, and about two o'clock he went to a house in Lower North Street to have dinner. A piece of meat stuck in his throat, and before it could be taken out he had expired. Dr. S.E. Martin deposed that when he saw the man he was dead, death resulting in suffocation. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
