Cavalry officer?
« on: Thursday 19 January 12 20:14 GMT (UK) »
I have a photo of my great-grandfather in uniform on a horse. I tried in the past to find information but nothing ... having seen "War Horse" recently it has re-newed my interest. Forum members have been SO helpful on other areas of my family so can anybody point me in the right direction please? Thank you!
Thomas Forrest born about 1868 Scotland, died 1926 Billericay, Essex
My nanna used to talk about the soldiers horses they looked after which I assumed was near Kirby Lonsdale, but after some research this might have been Newton with Scales, Lancashire (near Blackpool)!

popping the pic up for us to have a look at would be the best way forward...  :D
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Essex Imperial Yeomanry

A sergeant....

Shame we cant see his sword, as that would help date it...But...post 1912 because of the Imperial Service badge on his right breast...

He is not an officer. Sergeant/possibly Staff Sergeant. The badge on his right breast shows he was a pre-WW1 Territorial. On the left breast is the ribbon for the Queen South Africa medal - ie Boer War veteran.

The easiest thing would be to look for this medal on Ancestry.

Photography was taken 1915/16 - from the tunic.

Had a look on Ancestry - but can't locate this in military listings - am I missing something?
I had no idea he was involved in Boer War - that's never been mentioned - I just assumed WW1 ...

Done some Googling - Casus-Belli.co.uk - Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 - T Forrest 28503 listed as Private Imperial Yeomanry - does that sound promising enough to spend £5 for a view???
