***COMPLETED*** MARSH family, East Langdon - Look-Up Please
« on: Saturday 21 January 12 20:48 GMT (UK) »
MARSH  -   I have a maternal Ancestor called Fanny, born c 1853, East Langdon near Dover, who went on to marry Fdk SUTTON 11th Jan 1874.

Family Search suggests that Fanny was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (mmn unknown at this stage).  MARSH is a very common name in this area... so is John and so is Elizabeth.

I have seen a tree that suggests that John could be John Atkins M and Elizabeth's m n would then be ASH... I haven't found anything to substantiate this.

Does anyone have any parish records / census data that would help identify these ancestors?

Many thanks,
Timoth

Baptism, East Langdon

1853 2nd Oct
Fanny, dau of John & Elizabeth MARSH
Notes: of East Langdon - Labourer
Fanny seems to be the only child of this couple.

I see FreeBMD has a John Atkins MARSH & a John Wilkins MARSH, Jun qtr 1852, two of the women are Elizabeth, but I don't have marriages this late to match up these couples.

In 1861 Fanny is with her parents, John and Elizabeth, in Sutton, Kent together with 2 younger sisters born at Waldershare, Kent  ref.RG9 - 544 - 112 - 6

Fanny is not with them in 1871 but John is now shown as John A. Marsh and with the family is a Mark Ash who is shown as father.   Looks as if Elizabeth gave the family information and that it is her father and not John's.

Indeed, Elizabeth Ash bp.11/3/1832 East Langdon dau. of Mark and Mary.

Also:

John Tkins (Atkins) Marsh bp.25/5/1823 East Langdon son of George and Sarah.

Just so you don't get mislead by the tree you've seen.   The tree states that John Atkins Marsh was the son of a George and Esther but as the baptisms states, his mother was a Sarah.

There were 2 Georges fathering children in East Langdon in this time span - a George and Sarah and a George and Esther.

George bc.1781 and Sarah bc.1786 are on the 1841 Census at East Langdon but no family with them.

Ah! - Thanks Annette!  That's splendid!    ;D     I take it that the tree I may have seen is correct as to the names of the other daughters.... ?

I am particularly interested in following up the maternal line, whilst I accept that I may be very lucky to get much further than Elizabeth ASH.  The maternal line of Fanny MARSH stops with me and my aunt's two boys.  I'll now have a bash at following descendents of the other two MARSH girls.

Thanks again,
Timoth

Not so splendid - have just had another look at this and I'm wrong re. John's parents!!! (Shock, horror).

I should have also looked at deaths and I now see that there were - unbelievably - 2 John Atkins Marsh born in East Langdon.

John Atkins Marsh b.1823 died 1901 Dover, Kent
John Atkins Marsh b.1826 died 1899 Dover, Kent.

Yours is the later one so not the one baptised 1823, son of George and Sarah.

Will have another delve into this later (have got to go out).

Hi Annette,
Following up the info you have found, I have found this on a tree whose owners genes are not what they were.....

Mark ASH, baptized 10 Feb 1799 at St Augustine, East Langdon (Kent).
Married (1) Elizabeth HART, 19 Jul 1820 at St Augustine, East Langdon (Kent).
Married (2) Mary CHAPMAN, 17 Apr 1830 at St Augustine, East Langdon (Kent), born Abt 1795 in Ware (Kent).

Am I right in thinking that this appears to fit?

Mark was the eighth child of Luke and Ann nee COOK who married at Dover, Oct 1785.

Is St. Augustine a Roman Catholic church?  Luke and (most of) his children appear to be named after apostles.
