Did my grandfather die in the war

How can I find out if my great grandfather died in the War
Or would he have been too old to go?
any sites i should be looking at
Can’t find him anywhere so looking at this possibility 

John Henry Smith abt 1871 Manchester, England   

Can’t find his family on the 1901 census

Missing from the 1911 census but his wife and family are on it

To answer your question about where to search, This link takes you to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site where you can search for your relative. With a surname of Smith it may not be the easiest as there are several J H Smith son there. If you have any other information about him, it may be easier to narrow down entries.

On the 1911 census does his wife state she is a wife or a widow ( yes I know its before the actual 1914 - 18 war.)

it states wife.. I’m probably barking up the wrong tree with this but I have to check all the same
