Hyland/McKearney (Ireland to Australia) 1879
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 05:30 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to track paternal great grandparents, James Joseph Hyland and Annie McKearney, originally from Ireland, who departed England for Australia in 1879.  (Annie's name has variously been written as "McKearney" and "McCarney".)

Their first child, Mary Theresa Holmesdale Hyland, was born on the ship (the "Holmesdale") on 6 April 1879.

James died in Adelaide in 1916, and Annie died in Adelaide in 1928 (aged 74).

I assume James and Annie would have married within a year or two of departure from Ireland/England but I haven't been able to find any record of the marriage in Ireland or England.  The closest I've come is a marriage in Lurgan (Armagh) of James Hyland and Annie M'Conaghy in September 1878.

Any help would be appreciated!

Australian death certificates are often very informative- are the parents' names listed on James and Ann's death certificates?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Many thanks for the responses.  I have a copy of the "at sea birth record" for Mary (and have noted the Heyland and McArthy).  For the other four children born in Australia, it was variously Highland, Hyland, McKearney and McCarney.  I suspect accents resulted in spelling variations.

I haven't checked death certificates in South Australia.  I considered this option, but in the time period in question (1907-1937) there was limited information on  South Australian death certs.  That's why I was trying to work forwards from marriage, rather than backwards from death!

If nothing comes from the Irish end, I might try to track down original migration documentation in SA archives.

Hi Steve,

Looking for information on the parents of James Hyland and Annie McKearney. I am the grandaughter of Frank Richard Hyland (1916-1998) , son of Richard Hyland and Mary Teresa Hyland nee Carroll. Also looking for information on information on Teresa Gaynor and Thomas Carroll arrived on the Hersperides.

Anything help would be appreciated as I have just recently commenced looking into the Hyland branch.

Dear Nicta (?)

It's absolutely wonderful to make contact with you.  As I was doing my family tree work, it broke my heart to track down information on your Mum and the two children.  I have some information which I'll send you; my email address is (*).

Send me an email and I'll attach paperwork back to you.

All the very best,

Steve Hyland

Hi, would like to share that a James Hyland lived in Fuller Street, Walkerville SA from 1881 according to council rate books of Town of Walkerville. Also from 1917-17 James' name disappears from the rate books and is replaced by Annie Graham Hyland until 1928. Would this be your relatives? They were always tenants of the one house and garden at the river end of the street. James may have worked at the nearby slaughteryards run by Leopold Conrad or had a market garden - supposition.
Also I can share that in the Council Minutes, in 1881 James Hyland was made a constable for the year, and that he was regularly employed to 'break stones/metal' for road making which would make him a 'road man'.  His last mention in the Council Minutes was in 1901.   Lyn, Walkerville hon. local historian.
