MYLES
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 22:26 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find why Alice Myles ms Clark or Chlery came to Scotland from Florence Court, Co Fermanagh around 1849 with her family and not her husband Thomas Myles. I would appreciate any help as this question has been bothering family for years and it would be good to find out what happened to Thomas.

Any clues in Scottish records? for example, what is her status in census records (married, etc.)?

The 1851 census finds Alice living in Baillieston aged 48 and a widow. Her children are John (26), Jane (23) and Thomas (16). Thomas died in 1855 (20) as a result of an accident in the pit and his death certificate identifies his father as Thomas Myles, farm labourer.
Alice died in 1868 and her husband Thomas Myles is identified as a gardener.
His surname may have been spelt Miles and he may have died in Ireland prior to 1849 but I have no more information regarding this.
It would be good to find out more about the family prior to coming to Scotland and especially Thomas.
Alice's father is identified as Francis Clark on her death certificate but her mother is unknown.

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864 and it would seem that Thomas Myles died before this date.

Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.
