IE8 Browser icons changed (weird)
« on: Tuesday 24 January 12 12:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

Just noticed something odd and wonder if anyone else had experienced it or know why it's happening.....

Windows7, IE8.
The icons on some of the URL's I go to have changed as shown in the window tabs ( well three have that I know of)

1) Rootschat icon now looks like a white n on a green background (below)
2) Ancestry (UK) icon now is the Rootschat icon (below)
3) Google search results now is the Ancestry.uk icon (below) [if I go to Ancestry.com, the icon is the corresct ancestry one]

I've turned the computer off, waited and on again - still the same!
Does anyone recognise the website that OddIcon1 belongs to?

Thanks for your help  - I'm  ???
Cheers

Hi Leanne

Phew, well that makes me feel better  :)

At least it's not just me and we're in different countries (though I am only across the ditch from you).   I was worried I was being phished or something sinister!. Maybe Microsoft are doing an update and it's an unexpected result from that  ???

PS: when did you notice it? I can't be sure, I thought the icons were ok a few hrs ago at most

Cheers

Noticed it about the last hour and a half.
Have ran my anti-virus quick scan and didn't pick anything up.

These little bitmaps are called 'favicons'. They're cached (i.e. stored locally on your computer) just like web pages. I think the problem you encountered is due to this local storage becoming corrupt - if you clear the cache in IE it should solve the problem. A similar problem used to afflict desktop icons on Vista and earlier. The 'n' favicon must belong to a site you've visited or bookmarked.

Personally I would dump IE and get a safe modern browser such as Firefox, Opera or Chromium (not Chrome if you value your privacy).

Paul.

You can control your privacy options on Chrome now, but Chrome still has a few issues with Ancestry.

I meant your privacy from Google Nick rather than other users of your computer :)

It's ridiculous that Ancestry still has poor support for Windows 7 64 bit regardless of browser...grrrrrrrr!

To be honest, I'm more surprised that so many people have 64-bit computers that they don't need !  ;D
