Sandpit House, Edrom
« on: Tuesday 24 January 12 22:21 GMT (UK) »
Several of my rellies are recorded as living/being born/getting married at Sandpit House, Edrom in the 1870s/1880s.  I've searched a number of old maps in/around Edrom but I cannot find the house.  Does anyone know where it was please?  Thanks in advance.

Pauline,
I can't find it on the map either but going by the neighbour function on the 1881 census discs it must be between Mount Pleasant, Belshiels and Greenknowe all of which do show on the map.

Hi Barbara

I had planned to look at the census next, to 'walk' the route and narrow down where it should be, just as you have done!  On looking at the map since your post, it still puzzled me why there doesn't seem to be another separate dwelling in the general area of the three properties you've mentioned.  I went back to the census records and Bingo!!  In 1851 and 1861, my relatives are shown as living at - 'Place Belshiel, address Sandpit House'.  This suggests to me that Sandpit House was within the Bellshiel farm complex.   ;D

I guess that's as close as I'm likely to get, so I'm happy to have narrowed it down.  Many thanks for your help.

You are welcome Pauline, always nice to have an idea exactly where they were.  Wonder if it is still called that.
