military personnel orphans
« on: Wednesday 25 January 12 10:47 GMT (UK) »
When my great uncle was blown up in May 1915 he was serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Worcester Regiment and his wife had already died in India in 1909. He had four children who were orphaned upon his death and I wondered whether the Army took charge of providing the orphanage care for the children?
I know the youngest did go a Roman Catholic orphange somewhere in England. I do not know where they were placed whilst my uncle served in the war either.
Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

In the 19th Century losing a wife meant that children of serving soldiers could apply for a place in Chelsea Royal Military Asylum. Boys stayed until they were 14, and girls until they were 16.

The online records stop before your time, and there were more council run orphanages available in 1909. Where were the children in 1911?

I have the feeling that the children were with their father in India in 1911 as he was serving there with the Worcester second Battalion. He would have come back to England with them when the regiment returned in 1913. He may have put them in a school while he served in the First War until his death in 1915. His orphaned son told his daughter that he went to an orphanage.

By the way were the overseas regiments included in the 1911 census and how and where might I find this info? Many thanks for your reply
