Rootsmagic-lost shortcut on desktop
« on: Friday 27 January 12 15:02 GMT (UK) »
The icon for RM4 resides on my desktop.  When I tried to open it the computer seems to have lost the file therefore I can't open my files.  Has something gone wrong or am I doing something wrong  :-\

Very confused

Does the program open when you click on the icon or does it open but then fails to find your tree file?

RM4 usually defaults and saves the tree file in your documents folder xxxxx.rmgc unless of course you have specified it to be saved elsewhere.

Have you tried doing a windows search for the file?

If the icon isn't pointing to RM4 program do a windows search for Rootmagic 4, when you find it , right click then select send>desktop(create a shortcut) and over write the old icon.

Thanks for all of your responses!
japeflakes, I'm using Windows XP.
Here's what happens.  I double click on the shortcut icon on my desktop.  I get a 'missing shortcut' window & it tells me 'windows is searching for Rootsmagic.exe' or I can browse myself to find it.  The search seems to take forever so I cancel it.
If I click on the file in My documents (which says 'XXX Rootsmagic File, not XXXXrmgc) I get the window, 'Open with' then the list of of programmes...RM is not listed although it appears on my list of programmes on my main programme menu  :-\
jc26red, I've yet to try your suggestion but I'll let you know what happens when I do.
Anymore helpful suggestions would be MUCH appreciated as I don't want to lose all that data  :'(

Suggestion only:
Using Explorer
Programs
Find Roots Magic Folder
Open folder
Find. exe file
Right click it

Send to desktop

Any luck. If not where does it fail?

Tried your suggestion jc26red.  Once found I wasn't sure which one to try so used the one highlighted (see attached screen shot) & once on the desk top & opened all I got was an empty file.  Sorry couldn't include the screen shot as the file was too big to upload but some were shortcuts & some were file folders.  Getting more & more muddled with this  :(
Trying japeflakes idea next,

Jane

japeflakes.  Tried that but when I click to open the RM folder I get the 'missing shortcut' thing & it starts its search  :(

I'm at a real loss here :-\

Just a few suggestions:

1: If RootsMagic is on the START menu, try starting it from there.

2: If it's not there, try to find it in My Computer (usually the folder is C:\Program Files\RootsMagic 4) and double-click on the RootsMagic.exe file.

3: If the RootsMagic.exe file is not found or will not start, you may need to re-install RootsMagic.

On the brighter side, the data files should be safe as they are stored separately from the program files.

Hope you get things sorted out.

Mike.

Oh, and I suppose you have tried turning it off and on again  ;)
