Birth look up, please
« on: Saturday 28 January 12 13:33 GMT (UK) »
The only info I have is:

Florence Edith Smith, birth registered in Nottingham, Q1 of 1890.

Is that enough to go on?

I've tried searching for her on the 1891 census, but although there are a number of possibilities there aren't any with quite the correct age - i.e. they're either too young or too old, so I'm a bit stuck.

Any kind soul help me, please?

Thanks
STG

Edited to say : (because I forgot) - there's a submitted record on the IGI for a Florence Edith Smith, who, it says, was christened at St Catherine's, Nottingham on 10 Sept 1890, d/o Samuel Smith and Mary Ellen Danby.  But, of course, I've got no idea whether she's the Florence Edith that I'm looking for.

Hi

What exactly are you looking for?

Here is her birth, the certificate would give you her parents' names. With a name like Smith, you may need that to make sure that you are following the right family.

In truth, I'm looking for her parents names, but was hoping not to have to buy the certificate.

According to FreeBMD there was only one Florence Edith Smith who's birth was registered in Nottingham between 1888 and 1891.

The only Florence E  I can see in Nottinghamshire is in Radford, parents Frederick and Charlotte, but her age is given as 4 months, which is too young, or in Nottingham parents Alfred and Matilda  but aged 2, so too old. This is why I think you may need to get the certificate.

Where have you got her name from, have you found her on a later census?

> where have you got her name from ...

It's a friend's family tree and the info is from friend's mother.

Mind you, I was also told that Florence married George Spowage.  On the 1911 census there's a male G Spowage and a female F Spowage (who I think are George and Florence), who say they've been married 2 years (which chimes with a 1909 marriage in Nottingham between a George and a Florence Edith), and have a 9mth old daughter.  Says that G was  born in South Normanton, which, although in Derbyshire was in Mansfield reg district.  The only George born in Mansfield district between 1880 and 1890 was George Arthur, b. 1881, but he died in 1888, so now I've got absolutely no idea who "my" George is at all!

There's talk in the family, apparently, of gypsies - although I don't know if that's the Spowage or Smith side - so it could be that George's birth simply wasn't registered.

Hum.  Really stuck now.  Will have to suggest the purchase of a certificate to friend.

Well that looks promising.  George and Florence's first child was Mary Isabella, so I'm thinking the child was named after Florence's mother and Florence's sister.  Beginning to come together a bit now, esp as I'm told they were married in Sneinton.

Now to try to find them in 1891 ...

Thanks
