Birth record of David Walter Morgan
« on: Saturday 28 January 12 14:12 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the birth of my ancestor David Walter Morgan around1734.According to his Cambridge University graduation record his father was William of St.Georges,Southwark.He went on to become Priest in Ordinary at the Chapel Royal,Westminster and  after his death in1795 he was buried in Westminster Abbey. He was also Rector of Little Leighs in Essex a position obtained for him by the wealthy Olmius family.I have been unable to find to trace his birth or uncover any connection with the Olmius family. If anyone is able to look up parish records for me I would be extremely grateful and would,of course, reimburse any expenses.Would the place to look be the London Metropolitan Archive ? I have looked up some Southwark records on-line but have failed to find anything. He was married in 1758 at St.Martin in the Fields.I believe this is Westminster and their records for this period can only be accessed by visiting their record office.

Hi

Possible siblings baptised at the same church to parents William and Elizth

4th July 1733
Evans Ann Morgan (daughter)

20th February 1735/36
Thomas Morgan

There are also 4 baptisms at St Saviour Southwark between 1723- 1732. These may not be connected but St Saviours registers gave more detail. On Mary Morgan's baptism 11th August 1732, this William's occupation was given as book keeper.

Morgan is a common surname so this Prerogative Court of Canterbury will may not be connected.

Will of William Morgan of Christ Church Southwark , Surrey 11 September 1741   PROB 11/712

A Maria Morgan daughter of John Morgan married John Luttrell-Olmius, 3rd Earl of Carhampton in 1798

Hi  Valda
Thanks for finding David Walter Morgan's birth record at St.Georges,Southwark.Father William must have been quite wealthy to get his son to Cambridge unless the Olmius connection was involved.I believe that the John Morgan, father of Maria Morgan you found was a clergyman and the brother of William Morgan. He had also been rector of Little Leighs presumably benefitting from the patronage of the Olmius family.I have not been able to check this myself or find out any more about John Morgan who might be the key to the Olmius connection. The only son of David Walter Morgan,John Drigue Morgan was awarded an annual salary ( I cannot think of the legal term for it) by  a member of the Olmius family. The name Drigue was the family name of the wife of Herman Olmius ,a wealthy Hugenot merchant who had arrived in London some years previously.
