I am looking for info on Elizabeth Pleace daughter of William Pleace born in Thorverton about 1825. She married Richard Greener at Newington 1845. I have the marriage cert. but cant find anything before that.

Hi Winette

The IGI has a baptism  of Elizabeth Manley Pleace, 20 June 1824 at Throverton, mother Elizabeth Pleace (no details for father).

If you go to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

and input WILLIAM PLEACE, and under EVENT input birth/baptism, and then select Great Britain / England / Devon under the REGION - don;t select a year

The results give you a William Pleat b 1812 in Throverton.

Click on that record.

At the bottom of the record is a batch number - click on the batch number and ont he new form input only PLEACE and select British Isles under the Region (no other details needed)

You should then get a list that includes Elizabeth (if this is her!)

cheers

Paul

Thanks Paul, I do have a copy of Thorverton Parish Register for St Thomas-a-Becket so I did know about Elizabeth Manley Pleace but later on in 1835  there is an entry for an Elizabeth born to Elizabeth & Charles Manley so have wondered if there was a family connection. My Elizabeth has only used the one christian name on the marriage cert, census etc.  I'll check the family history site. Winette

:)Thanks Sue, how interesting census are. I had some of Samuel & Betty's (elizabeth) baptisms but not all, either they were done at another church or not at all. Winette

How would I go about proving if Elizabeth Manley Pleace  Circa 1824 might be my Elizabeth Pleace who on her marriage cert states her father William was a grocer who was still alive in 1845.  Winette

I suppose you have to use what circumstantial evidence you can find.

As you trace the line back another generation, I would be stunned if you didn't find 'Manley' appearing as the surname on one side or another.  Its more likely that it will come in as a way of preserving a maiden name.

It may take a few attempts and a few dead ends, but that's the beauty of using the IGI batch search.  When you have found records you are 'happy' with, I understand you can ask to see copies of the actual registers, which may contain more information than the IGI does.

cheers

Paul

Paul, would you be able to look up the 1841 Census  & see if you can find Elizabeth Pleace. She got married in 1845 but dont seem to be able to find her before that. The baptism entry for Elizabeth Manley Pleace only mentions a mother also Elizabeth Pleace but the marriage cert says father William Pleace, we thought she might have been illegitimate, possibly they married later or that's not mine after all.  Winette

Hi Winette

Unfortunately I haven't got access to the 1841 census.

I suggest you post a 'look-up' request on the Look Up pat of this Devonshire board, giving the details that you have already.

It may take a while to get a response as doing look-ups on the 1841 and 1851 is not as easy as on the later ones - it often involves reading through a number of pages as the indexing isn;t always as complete.

Good luck!

Paul
