Tollesbury Birth Look up

I was wondering if anyone could find out who Henry Hawes' (1823-1901) parents were?

He was born in Tollesbury but ended up living in Middlesborough (he appears to have been a mariner).

I may be clutching at straws thinking his parents were John (1797-1862) and Elizabeth (1797-1846) Hawes (My Greatx3 grandpa) - I have no firm evidence that they are related.

I am quite new to tracing family history although I have been quite fortunate using the census' and have built up quite a picture. However, how am I supposed to be able to look back past 1841? My family all appear to come from Tollesbury, but the parish register doesn't appear to be on line.

Did you find John and Elizabeth on the 1841 census living at Tollesbury?

I can't find a birth for Henry to John and Elizabeth on familysearch.org

I googled Essex parish records and this site came up. May be worth a look. I am sure someone more familiar with essex records will be along to help.

I have looked through Tollesbury baptisms from 1820-1837 and couldn't find one for Henry. There are several children to a John and Elizabeth but around 1823 there was a gap of a few years so maybe Henry was baptised elsewhere.

I have from the 1841 census - Abraham (1829-1889), William (1831-1901), and Joseph (1836-?) as Children of John and Elizabeth Hawes - did they have any other children according to the Tollesbury Parish register?

Would it be unusual to have your place of birth at Tollesbury on the census' yet be baptised else where?

Just before I start spending more money (just subscribed to find my past and family tree builder premium!) I was wondering if you could tell me if it is possible to know who John Hawes (1797-1862) parents were from the parish register?

I couldn't find a baptism for John Hawes c1796 or any other Hawes, but a lot of it was difficult to read because of the awful handwriting, but did find the marriage.

- I assume from what you are saying that Hawes further back must have come from somewhere other than Tollesbury then?
