Austro-Hungarian Army Query
« on: Sunday 29 January 12 12:42 GMT (UK) »
Is there anyone who could help with identifying a specific regiment in the A-H army that a Belgian ancestor of mine was serving in when he died in 1799?
Thanks,
Richard

Hi there,

Thanks for responding. I have a 1799 "todten schein" for him but I can't seem to tally the abbreviated name of the regiment with anything I can find on line.  He was originally from Limburg in present-day Belgium so could probabably only have served in a number of regiments. Any good at deciphering handwritten text?

Richard

Richard,

I'm certainly interested. Scan the text and send it in. There are several really adept decipherers on RC that will come to your aid. Reading the text might be the easiest part of the exercise.

Thanks for responding and sorry for the delay - I've been away.
Here's the attachment with the name of the regiment.

Thanks for any help in deciphering the name

It says Latouris'sches Chev.leg. Regiment, i.e. Chevauxlegers-Regiment La Tour.
The numbering and designations of the k.u.k. cavalry regiments changed constantly in the Napoleonic period.
This regiment was designated
from 1769 - Cavallerieregiment Nr.31
from 1791 - Chevauxlegers-Regiment Nr.31 (La Tour)
from 1798 - Leichtes Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 11 (La Tour)
from 1802 - Chevauxlegers-Regiment Nr.4 (La Tour)
from 1806 - Chevauxlegers-Regiment Nr.4 (Vincent)
The names in brackets are the Inhaber/colonels of the regiment. Maxmilian Graf Baillet de Latour was Inhaber from 1790 to 1806.

The regiment traditionally recruited in the Austrian Netherlands until the territory was lost to France in 1794.

In 1799 they fought at Ostrach, Stockach, Zürich and Mannheim.
History of the regiment (in German) at:

Hi Adrian,

Thanks immensely for this precious aid. I was much of the way there with the name of the Inhaber but I wouldn't at all have thought that the rest might be French.

Of course, I'm now bound to ask whether you might know where I can turn to next to find out more about his service in the regiment, etc. Is there maybe a particular archive say somewhere in Vienna (or the former Austrian Netherlands) where such regimental records are kept?

Much appreciated

Richard

no idea if they have info for so many times back, but ask at Kriegsarchiv/war-archive in Vienna: http://www.austria.gv.at/site/5003/default.aspx

info what they have in german - it looks like also for the time you stated but not clear if it will help you:

Thanks for the pointer towards the Kriegsarchiv. I'll definitely get in contact with them. Given my deplorable German, I hope someone there will speak something other than German though!
