Any chance photo Earlsterndale churchyard?
« on: Tuesday 31 January 12 23:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Is there any kind person who might be able to take a photograph of the gravestone in Earlsterndale churchyard of a GEORGE FINNEY, who died 24th Dec 1802 at Etwall?
Also on his stone are his son William, died 14th May 1868, George died 1866 aged 8, and Elizabeth Finney died 1888 at Blackpool.
It would be lovely to see it.

I have a ref of B143. These are from the old wishfulthinking site on Genuki - I see Rosemary is updating it at the moment, so can't check them. Sorry

Many thanks

Sorry, also found one for THOMAS ROGERS died 14 March 1873 age 62 and JOHN THOMAS ROGERS, son of Thomas & Hannah died 28 July 1878 age 38. Also on this stone Henry Rogers, Mary and Joseph, all children of John and Hannah Rogers. Think the top name would be HENRY ROGERS died 184 aged 20.
I have a ref of A65.

Thanks again

Gosh! Thanks for replying pathar. You never know what's going to come back on Rootschat - this post is nearly 4 years old!
Nobody else has offered, so thank you very much.  :D

I see I wrote George FINNEY died 24th Dec 1802 - Doh!  :o Senior moment.
That's when he was born - he died 2nd March 1867 and IS buried at Earlsterndale.

The ROGERS ones are Ok - except Henry died 1844. The sister Mary and the brother Joseph died 1847 - within 3 weeks of each other. Interestingly, all these children were in the early 20s. I wonder what disease was particularly virulent just then.

I'll see if any other information has surfaced on the web since I first posted this, and let you know .
At the moment I still only have the refs I said before - not sure how these relate to the churchyard.

Again many thanks for your reply.
Have a great Christmas  :D

Hi,
No problem,
As I said, it will be after Christmas, probably in the middle of January. It will give you time to sort out anything else that you are looking for in that area. Do you know the area?

Do you live fairly locally to Earlsterndale then Pathar?
Many, many moons ago I lived in Cheshire - not too far away, so I have been to Derbyshire - long before I was in to family history though.
Now I wish I lived closer instead of overseas, and could visit the Derbyshire Record Office at Matlock which seems a treasure trove of information and documents.  ;)

I live in Hertfordshire , but I "go home" to Hartington as often as I can !
I don't manage to visit Matlock RO these days - there aren't enough hours in a day !
l will let you know when I have the photos and if you want to send me a private message with your email address , I will send them that way.
It would be helpful if you could list all the grave stones that you know are definitely there, so that l know exactly who I'm looking for and if the church is open when I get there, l will look for any plaques inside.
Keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't snow in Derbyshire in January. Earl Sterndale is tricky when it snows!

Ah I remember HArtington  :) I even stayed in the wonderful youth hostel there - not many youth hostels you'd describe as 'wonderful', but then not many of them are Elizabethan manors!
A lovely part of the world - but as you say, pretty bleak and cold come January.  ???

I've haven't seen that any of  my ancestors were illustrious enough to be buried inside the church - just in the cold outside. I'll send you a pm when you let me know if you got the photos.

It wouldn't surprise me if we find some related people between us -  I see you have Gould at Butterton - I have an Elizabeth ch 1701, father John of Elkstone. I also have people from Grindon, Onecote, Alstonefield, HArtington ............  all that Staffs/Derbyshire area.

Hi Pathar
Hope you had a good Christmas  :D

Can't see where your Gould fits to mine at the moment - but possibly somewhere along the line.

You say 'William Woodhouse, son of William Finney" - how did that work? DId he change his name or something?
Most recent William Finney I have is the one born 1827 at Earlsterndale, died 1868 - he is mentioned on the gravestone of his father George - the one buried 1867 at Earlsterndale. He, William, had several children but not a William as far as I know.
Lots of Finney families around there.
