Mary Jane CLARK marriage
« on: Sunday 05 February 12 21:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have placed this request for help in wiltshire, but the marriage may have taken place elsewhere.

MARY was born MARSTON MAISEY WILTSHIRE in 1846.

In 1861 still living with her family in marston maisey.
In 1871 she is living with her family in stratton st margaret, which is now part of swindon wiltshire.

Problem i am having is in 1871 she is now MARY JANE PAYNE (widow), I have searched high & low and cannot find a marriage.
Hoping another pair of eyes might help with something i may have missed.

I see her as you say in 1861 and again in 1871 but like you cannot find a marriage at the moment. :(

Will take another look  around later.

Thanks for taking a look.

I cannot help thinking that the 1871 census detail is a mistake.

In 1891 although her birth year is stated as 1850 wiltshire (on ancestry mistranscribed as MARY J JAGGER) she is living with her brothers wife in barkisland yorkshire, but she does have an illegitimate daughter.
Her name is given as MARY J CLARKE & she is stated as being single.

I believe in 1881 she is living in headingley yorkshire, birth given as 1851 born snowden wiltshire, Hard to read but is probably swindon where she was living in 1871.
In 1881 it also states that she is single.

Trying to  make some sense of the 1891 census.

Which one do you think is her illegitimate daughter

Stratton St Margaret is a civil parish in the borough of Swindon. It was a lot larger, incorporating most of Gorse Hill until 1890. Also what is now Penhill was in Stratton. St. Margaret. I think that the records for Marston Maisey are held in Gloucestershire, it came under the diocese of Gloucester. Also have a feeling that marriages etc, at one period where at Maisey Hampton.

The illegitimate daughter of MARY is ROSE ANNIE born 1882 halifax.

Rose was christened 20.4.1883 in ripponden, but at the time of the christening they were living in barkisland.

Thanks about the reply on the borough's, but i am aware of that.

What do you think about this Reggie, ???  its a long way from where she was originally but it does fit.

Marriage of Mary Clark and on the same page Alfred Payne  Dec quarter1865, Pancras 1B 17

Might be a coincidence but an Alfred Payne aged 23 died in Pancras March quarter 1866. 1B 62

That is a possibility.

She did have a sister who married in the parish of norwood in 1868, but was also back living in swindon in 1871 after being deserted by her husband.

Shame it is not on ancestry.

Would it not be worth taking a chance on the marriage certificate, you used to be able to give the fathers name as a reference check and if it was not the right one they only used to charge about £4.00 but not sure now as a lot has changed.
