1851 census has this couple with 3 children and 1 Grandchild living at Limehouse, Middlesex:

William SPRINGATE c1778 Deptford, Kent HEAD Blacksmith
Susanah c1784 Deptford, wife
Charles c1819 Poplar, Middlesex unmarried, Blacksmith
Susanah c1823 Poplar unmarried Bonnet Maker
Henry c1825 Poplar unmarried Blacksmith
Alfred c1842 Putney, Surrey

Other possible children from baptism records where parents names are correct and William is a blacksmith:
Louisa born April 1813 baptised April 1813 at Rotherhithe St Mary, Southwark
Sophia Susannah born 31 March 1820 baptised as an adult 16 March 1835 same church

The only marriage I could find for the parents was William SPRINGATE to Susanna PUNYER 4 June 1805 at Aldington, Kent. But of course this might not be the correct marriage.

Family search has multiple entries for children John, Elizabeth, William & Susannah all at Aldington.
Compton: England (Hampshire, Surrey), Australia
Bentley: England (Lancashire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire), Australia
McGowan: NZ, Australia
Rowley: NZ, England, Australia
Salvin: NZ, England, Australia
Von Lehenner: Germany, England

Hi,

I came across this thread when looking for something on Rotherhithe.

My 33 years of genealogy research tells me that you have to take many things with a grain of salt, and to always look for corroborating primary source evidence.

In this case, I am 99.99% certain that William Springate did marry Susannah Punyer.  William is the brother of my Nicholas, who also lived in Rotherhithe for some time.

While the 1851 census shows they were born in Deptford, I do not believe this is the case.  Undoubtedly enumerators make mistakes.  And the where born/from question was often misinterpreted.  We also often do not know who answered these questions!

In the 1841 census, William is staying with his son William, who along with another 3 siblings was born in Aldington.  Susannah is with the remainder of the children still in Limehouse. The grandson, is this other William’s son.  William and Susannah’s daughter born in Aldington was married in Deptford!!!

Some information from these 1841 census’ contradicts the 1851 census; also common.

There is a strong connection between the Springates from Biddenden (this name is in Biddenden for many centuries) and the town of Aldington. Susannah Punyer is from a town less than 4 miles from Aldington.

Trust this adds to the conversation.
