Was there a 'White Horse Tail Farm' at Rothbury?
« on: Friday 13 May 05 21:57 BST (UK) »
Hi
Does anyone know if there was a White Horse Tail Farm Rothbury in 1880 - 1900 approximately?  I think my Great Grandfather and his family may have worked there.
Best Wishes to all
Rhial

Hi Rhial

I've just come across your message and thought I'd reply.

There is a national archive site which allows you to look at the 1901 census for free.  If you go in to it and get to the 1901 census and put the word Rothbury and Northumberland in the Place Search options this will come up with a sheet of the farms and properties around the area.  If you look at the enumerator areas 6 and 9 (free of charge) and choose the Enumerator Description it will open a PDF file for you.  This gives you information of the name and general locality of the farms around that area.

When I get a chance I'll have a look at the Rothbury map.  I go up there quite a lot and may get a chance to inquire about it.

Hope this (late but better than never) information is of help to you.

Yours J.A.

Hi Rhial,

Sorry if this leads you up the wrong farm path, but there is a Wag Tail Farm just outside Rothbury, and from its website it looks very nice too. Their post code is NE65 7PL so you could put that into something like multimap and get an overview of the area. You never know there might be another farm still called White Horse Tail Farm.

Good Luck,
Patsy

Hi Rhial

I was up in Alnwick last week at a second hand barter book shop trying to find information on farm hinds and came across a book that recorded the names of farm fields in the Coquetdale area (Rothbury).  I had a look through to see if I could see anything relating to White Horse Tail.  There were some references to fields named after animals but alas nothing that would indicate a name for the farm you are looking for.  The sheer early winter coldness got the better of me in the end and I didn't get a chance to have a proper look.  I'll have a look again some time.
