Thanks for your reply. Yes I have. I've found a birth record with mothers name but I'm not sure if it's the right man. I was hoping I could get some more infor from parish records but I can't seem to find any

Thank you very much for your offer. My Grandfather Harry Gardner was born 1895. One piece of info shows that he was born in Downton, Wilts. A later census shows him as being born in Southampton, Hants. I can't find a birth entry for a Southampton birth. I was hoping that a search of the Wilts records may shed some light on it. To further muddy the water the 1901 census shows his his mothers name as Mary SMITH. I'm wondering if he was born out of wedlock?

Harry (T?) Gardner born Aug 1896, mothers name Mary Gardner. This is the Wilts birth details from FamilySearch.org.

I'll see what's about in Downton PRs at the weekend.   A likely birth registration was in Southampton, as you suggested - Harry Raymond Gardner 1895 September quarter, vol 2c, page 44.
