What happened to Alexander Letchford?
« on: Friday 10 February 12 10:42 GMT (UK) »
On 24 Sept 1883 Alexander Letchford married Martha Eva at Holy Trinity, Bolton with James William Letchford and Mary Ann Eva as witnesses. On 8 March 1890  Martha Eva (spinster) married John William Potter. On both occasions the bride's father was given correctly as Henry Eva, Bricklayer/bricksetter. The first marriage was found on both Lancs OPC and Familysearch. I then looked for births and found 3 for Letchford with Eva as the mother's name. Next I tried the 1891 census to see if I could find the children and found them with James Letchford and his wife Mary. I then assumed that perhaps there had been a mistake in the register and the brothers and sisters had been entered the wrong way round until I found a marriage for James William Letchford and Mary Ann Eva at the same church on 20 Oct 1883 with Alexander as one of the witnesses.  So perhaps between 20 Oct 1883 and 8 March 1890 Alexander had died but I haven't been able to find a death registration. I  did find an Alexander Letchford in the 1891 census but his wife was Ann, born in Ireland, nothing in 1901 or 1911 so far. The waters are very muddy can anyone help to clear them.

Hi Pollymann,

I think you will find Mary Ann and a few of her children on 1911

I just entered Mary Ann Letchford.

Best wishes

It seems very confusing  ::)

1891
John W Potter with Martha -born 1865 Highgate

1901
John Wm Potter with Martha -born 1864 St Pancras

1891
James Latchford b Bolton with Mary A born 1862 London

1901
James Litchford b Bolton with Mary Ann b London

Now I'll have to read it all again and think!

Thank you for all the replies. Not really fair confusing everyone on a Friday afternoon. So as regards James Alexander this is a no as his brother is James William. I know Martha married John William Potter as they are my husband's great-grandparents. Mary Ann is Martha's older sister and James William is Alexander's brother and they are with their parents James and Nancy on the 1881 census. Nancy is on a later census living with James and Mary Ann. What I really don't understand is why I can't find Alexander's death and why Martha is given as a spinster on her marriage to John William Potter (could just be a registration error I suppose).

Apologies if you have all this:

1901, James and Mary A have his mother Nancy with them.

1871 RG10   3938/ 23/40

Nancy 'Letsford' has sons James Wm 9 yrs and Alexander 7 yrs with her.

1881 - family together 'Ledsforth'

1891 Alexander Latchford is with Ann

After that - as you say he is missing  ::)

Unless there was a divorce it looks as though Martha married bigamously.

Possibly and it's not really that important but loose ends can be so annoying. If there was a divorce how would I find out?
