puzzled jones/thomas GRESFORD

If anyone can help sort out a puzzle I have in my tree. may need a look up in Gresford......My great grandmother Mary Thomas born 1860 Gresford married a Thomas bennett in Liverpool 1862... Her mother was a Martha Jones she was a boarder in Gresford in 1861 to a William thomas who in 1862 she married....Now it looks like Martha had a daughter Mary Jones born 1860 where she was a boarder.  My question is ....on the 1871 census Mary is shown as Mary Thomas....are they one and the same?...My thinking is that you would not name two children Mary would you?....I need to figure this out otherwise My great grandfather could be a Jones not a thomas?......thank you for any help

I would think it is almost certain that they are one and the same.This often is shown in families where the mother does marry after a child's birth.

However this does not necessarily mean that the father of Mary was a Jones,Martha being shown as unmarried and born in Ellesmere Shropshire in c 1822 in the 1861 Census.

Can you clarify which date is incorrect - birth or marriage?

Mary married a Thomas Bennett in 1886 at Liverpool.

Sorry...Yes Mary Married 1886 Martha married William in 1862
