Davies family
« on: Saturday 11 February 12 19:30 GMT (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone can halp me with my family tree.

my great great grandfather was owen davies and he married helen lewis at pembroke registry office.
owen was born abt 1822 and helen abt 1824
owen's father was william davies who i believe may have been born in 1795 his wife i believe was called ann (possibly phillips)

helen's parents i believe are james and martha both born about 1800.

I can go forward but seem to be having a difficulty with ancestors. All were born in pembrokeshire and Owen was a shipwright.

Is anyone able to give me any information about their descendants or how they lived.

Thanks

Gill

what occupations are given for the 2 fathers on the marriage cert?

The register office marriage could suggest that one or both of them are non-conformist. Do you have a place of birth for Helen? I can see Steynton & Milford Haven on different census entries. Owen seems to be consistent with Pembroke St Mary.

there's a marriage at Steynton for James Lewis & Martha Barr 1/4/1820 & another 15/4/1834 for James Lewis (widower) & Elizabeth Davies.

the marriage certificvate is difficult to read but I think that owen's father william had the same employment as him....shipwright. James was probably born in milford about 1799 in the parish of steynton, the same as his wife Elizabeth who may have been born in 1794.

whatever the employment is on the marriage certificate is the same as on the 1851 census...can't read that either

thankyou to everyone for helping me

is this the 1841 census that you think is the family for Owen?

1841 King St, Pembroke Dock, HO107/1451/2 folio 15 pg 21
William Davies 55 shipwright
Susanah 25 ind
Mary 20
William 15 ship apprentice
Elizabeth 20 dress maker
Robert 10
all born in county

There's a will at the NLW for that William from 1848, but it's not one that can be read online, so you'd need to buy a copy, I think

Do the names of the witnesses on the marriage cert help to identify their families?

From my database of all the bapt, mrge and burials for 1711 to 1950’s for Pembroke St Mary I note the following in the baptism register which covers the period 1813 to 1822
02 Apr 1822 Owen to William & Ann Davies of the Dock a shipwright baptised by C, Phillips.
01 Jun 1817 Mary Anne to William & Anne Davies of Pembroke Dock a shipwright baptised by C. Phillips.
From the same parish and database but from the baptism register which covers 1822 to 1847 I note
10 Mar 1825 William Joseph to William & Ann Davies of the Dock a shipwright baptised by W. Herbert.

The new town of Pembroke Dock was built on land within the boundary of the parish of Pembroke St Mary. It would gain its own church which began services in circa 1844 and become the parish church in the late 1860’s. Due to lack of housing most early incomers to the Dock resided in Pembroke Town. Beware that most streets of Pembroke Dock are quoted as of Pembroke St Mary when in fact they are in the town of Pembroke Dock and in the parish of Pembroke Dock St John.

From the same Pembroke St Mary Database but from the mrge register which covers the period 1813 to 1832 I note the following
13 Sept 1820 William Davies of St Petrox a bacholer mrd Ann Phillips o.t.p. a spinster by banns in front of Charles Philipps. William signed his name and Ann made her mark in the presence of Peter Wright and Thomas James.
Remembering ofcourse that William only had to reside at St Petrox for the minimum of 6 weeks to be of that parish at mrge, and it may well have no relationship to the parish of birth or baptism.

Consult ;
http://wwhttp://www.revjones.fsnet.co.uk/stackgrpreg/register.

From my database of Burgess of Pembroke Borough I note among all the other William Davies’s
William Davies a shipwright of Pembroke Dock made burgess 13 Jun 1861 Admin Bk 19 Page 92 the son of William Davies a Smith.

I note a William Davies was buried in Section E. plot 16 at Llanion Cemetery on the 12 May 1888 aged 87 yrs. I had hoped to find Helen perhaps in the same plot, but she is not there.

Neither appear in the Park St Cemetery of Pembroke Dock.

well, those baptisms seem to tie in with the family from 1841, but the marriage is a bit late considering the 1817 baptism.  ::)
Where does Susanah come into it? I know there are no relationships given in 1841, but it looks like she is of the family.

Is there any clue to the age of William who made burgess? Could it be the one born 1825? The William buried in 1888 is too young to be Owen's father - enumerated as 55 in 1841.
