Where Did She Die?
« on: Monday 13 February 12 12:38 GMT (UK) »
After trying to find my great granddad for a number of years I thought I would try and find the place where my great grandmother, who was born in Hastings 1847, died so if anyone can help it would be very much appreciated.

Last sighting on the 1901 census living in Islington with her son she was aged 49 (1851 aged 4 Hastings, 1861 aged 14 Hastings, 1871 aged 24 Hastings, 1881 aged 33 Plymouth, 1891 aged 42 Brighton).

Helen or Ellen Fanny as she was registered and baptised does not appear on the 1911 census so I presume she had died, she is on an electoral register in Islington in 1903.

There is a death registration of a Helen Cox aged 62 in 1910 Eastbourne, I am wondering if this is her and maybe lived or stayed in the area where she grew up when she died.

I have looked to see if there are any Helen Coxes on the 1901 census that may be the Helen Cox that died in Eastbourne in 1901, but there doesn't appear to be any likely candidates.

The descendants of Helen carried on living in the Middlesex area, her husband was from Birmingham.

Many thanks
Ewan

Have you considered the possibility that she re-married?

1901-1911 there were marriages in the Islington Reg district for:

Fanny Cox 1904
Nellie 1909
Helena 1910

Thank you.

Yes, I have looked at possible marriages for this lady, although over 55 years of age at those possible marriage years she could of quite easily have married again, I don't think the first one was particularly good.

I have looked on the 1911 index at the corresponding marriage names of these ladies but none seem to really fit or I couldn't find them ie

Fanny Cox married James Day or John Hart in 1904
Helena Cox married Harry John Briggs or Francis Thomas Griffin in 1910

For the moment I have eliminated Nellie Cox as I feel the name is too different.

But Nellie was the diminutive for Helen, so maybe you should not reject that one too quickly.
New York/Ontario: Buchan, Cronmiller/Kronmuller
Sussex: Harman
Chesham, Bucks: Plested, Dell, Dwight, Sedgewick, Cordery, Rance.
Alabama: Howton, Anderson, Palmer, Massey, Gwin
Gt. Gaddesden, Herts; Cook
London/ Bristol; Bellamy, Child
Scotland; McLeod, Shannon
British Columbia: McLeod, Simpson

She'd have been too young to qualify, Hannah :

Marriage, Dec qtr 1909
Nellie Cox
Leonard William A Watson
Islington, Vol 1b, page 621

Here's the most likely birth for the above named Nellie :

Birth, Sept qtr 1878
Nellie Cox
Islington, Vol 1b, page 316

Kind regards,

Pels.

Hannah, The reason for not following the 'Nellie' up straight away was because this lady was mostly known as Helen/
Ellen/Fanny, not saying that she wasn't known as a Nellie but I have never seen it in any documentaion, it would only have been rejected and put in a temporary folder until confirmation was found that it was the person or not.

Pels, thanks for finding a likely birth for the candidate Nellie Cox.
