Prison records
« on: Saturday 18 February 12 00:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi, does anyone know if prison records in the USA are kept from 1904- 1920? I am trying to locate records in the Clayton jail, Missourii? Possibly, also St.Louis jail?My apologies... my knowledge of USA jails is limited....! I have a great uncle who was in prison during the above dates and I would love to have more information. I have googled these prison's but cannot find any information regarding archive records. Also I know that he was eventually deported back to uk, would anyone know where i might find  information regarding this event?
Thankyou in advance for any information.

There is a chance that he might be mentioned in a local paper:

If it isn't a privacy issue, you could let us know his name and date of birth, etc. and we could try to help.

Hi  Lisa.

The newspaper  link was really very interesting and although I do already have newspaper articles on him, I found lots more on the link that you posted, thankyou!

And thankyou for the kind offer of help. I  know quite a lot of his history now but I think the next step would be to view his prison records. I wonder if the Usa has an equivilant to the British National Archives online where I could search?

Yes, I am a bit unsure whether to post his name especially as I don't think I will acheive anything by doing that as I already have all the details of his birth, death and where he was etc.. but if by doing so it could help  to find a source for his prison records then I might !!! :)  I will sleep on it , lol

I think I need to go check my notes to be sure of which prisons he was in. All of the information I have on the time he served in prison has come from newspaper cuttings and so its hard to know what is fact or fiction. I am pretty sure that he spent time in Clayton County jail though.

Thankyou very much for your help :)

Generally, each state has its own records.  Some states have more records than others (at least, that are available to the public).

You mentioned wondering about his return to the UK.  There are UK incoming passenger lists for this time frame.  I do not have access to the records, but there are a few others on this board who do have access.  They may be able to send the information to you privately.

I've done a lot of internet searches for my ancestors, in hope of finding little tidbits about them.  Remember when you are searching, to use first initial and last name, surname and first initial, Mr. in front of surname, etc.  ;) It is amazing what one can find when you expand the search terms.

PS  I wouldn't post his information if you have any doubt about doing so.  ;) :)

Hi Lisa, just to say thankyou for all of the help and suggestions.
Sorry, I have been a while  replying...my internet connection has been unbearably slow this past few weeks.
I do already have his incoming uk arrival as I think I mentioned he was deported from the USA  but your suggestions of how to expand my search terms have really helped me to gather more information, thankyou.

Hello lauren57, you mentioned the year of 1920 for a prison/jail record....is there a possibility that he was in jail or prison in 1920?  If so, he should be enumerated in that particular prison.    Pat
