Generally, each state has its own records. Some states have more records than others (at least, that are available to the public).
You mentioned wondering about his return to the UK. There are UK incoming passenger lists for this time frame. I do not have access to the records, but there are a few others on this board who do have access. They may be able to send the information to you privately.
I've done a lot of internet searches for my ancestors, in hope of finding little tidbits about them. Remember when you are searching, to use first initial and last name, surname and first initial, Mr. in front of surname, etc.
It is amazing what one can find when you expand the search terms.
