William Howe Head age 29 occ: Police Officer born abt 1882 Aby Durham

Hi,

To save any confusion - I believe the birth place should say Durham City.

The word Claypath and a number have been crossed out. 'City' appears to have then been added by someone else.

Kind regards,

Pels.

Thank you for your replies.  I am totally confused now.  The information I gave was supposedly from the birth certificate, are you saying that this is the wrong address or the wrong person?

On the census you quoted, William has written his actual place of birth as 79, Claypath. This has then been crossed out and the word City has been added after the word Durham. This fits with his birth certificate. I don't know who amended it - but it looks like it was altered later.

Whoever filled in the census form misunderstood what was required, they entered the address when all that was required was County or town or parish. It looks like this was realised , crossed out and the correct entry added.

The address is where the birth took place, the mother did not have to be living there, she could have been visiting for example.

It may be  a coincidence but 80 Claypath was the Police Station in 1881.
