maybe the Jane in 1851 isn't her daughter?

That means there ought to be two of them (both aged 4 or 5, probably both in Burgh) to be seen in 1841 but there's only one.  :-\

Oh yes, good point! Didn't think of that, Geoff!  :)

Well after the 1861 census that shows a corrected name from Lamar Brown to Tamar Brown, which may or not be the correct family, there is  also a 1881 census that has  the correct name (Tamar) and also shows Jane Brown b: 1833 and again George b:1851 born in Ousby, Cumberland, living in Lancashire.
So if I can find her marriage to Brown this might start to look possible (maybe), providing her maiden name is listed as  Clapperton that is.

Don't forget Carlisle is only eight miles away from another country with a totally different system of recording everything.  In those days, Burgh by sands was only a three mile walk from Scotland, across the rather dangerous sands but many people, paricularly drovers, used the route. Have you tried Scotland's People?

I did do a quick check of Scottish records and whilst there were Clappertons around, the name Tamar didn't seem to be there at all.

Strange but until I started this branch of my tree I had never heard of the name Tamer, now I see it used to be used a lot years ago.

I have made inquiries with the owner of a "private" tree on A*******, who "seems" to have all the birth certificates etc., but as yet have received no response (no reply for a month).

Thanks for trying folks

Richard

It appears that the Tamar I 1st asked about is not part of my tree.  Her maiden name was Westmorland and she married a George Brown.  Info from another tree owner.
So it's back to the drawing board for Tamar Clapperton and her daughter Jane (last seen in 1841 census)

Hi everyone!

I'm having difficulty with Tamar too :( she just seems to disappear off the face of the earth after 1841. I've also noticed the person who has all the baptism records etc for Tamar and her siblings, so annoying they are private!!

Hi Tinelouisa,

Welcome to rootschat  :)

Nothing wrong with "private". My tree is as well but if someone asks for information I try to help them.  The tree you mentioned just does not respond to any inquiry.  Nothing anyone can do about it   >:(
