1861/1851 census look up - Reynolds
« on: Saturday 14 May 05 20:14 BST (UK) »
Hello, could someone please help me solve a mystery?  I am looking for the father of Beatrice Reynolds, who is listed on her marriage certificate as William Reynolds, Engineer.  Beatrice was born in Harrold, Bedfordshire in 1870.  The 1881 census has her living with her grandparents, Thomas and Arabella, in Harrold Beds.  There is also an Isabella Reynolds, but I'm not sure if this is the mother or an aunt.  Anyway I haven't been able to find William , so if some one would be kind enough to look up the 1861 or 1851 census for me, I will hope to be able to figure out if he was part of this family.

Thank you, Bev

In 1861 we have
High St, Harrold
Thomas Reynolds head marr 47 ag lab born Harrold
Arabella Reynolds wife 44 lace maker b Harrold
Hannah Reynolds mother widow 88 pauper b Harrold
plus the following sons and daughters all born in Harrold
Isabella 19; Albert 17; Sophia 14; Michael 11; Hannah 9; Mary L 5.

In 1851 High St Harrold
Thomas Reynhold 37; Arabella 35; Isabella 9; Albert 7; Sophia 4; Michael 1 All born Harrold

In 1841 High St Harrold
Thomas Reynolds 26 Arabella 26 both born in Beds; Hannah Reynolds 69 not born in Beds

And coming back to 1871
High St Harrold
Thomas Reynolds h m 56 ag lab
Arabella wife 54 lace maker
Isabella dau 28 single lace maker
Sophia dau 23 single lace maker
Hana dau 17 single lace maker
Mary L 14 lace maker
Beatrice grand dau 1
All born Harrold

Never any sign of an engineer called William Reynolds

I think she was probably telling porkies when she married, to hide her illegitimacy.

Her birth is on FreeBMD as being in the March quarter 1870 Bedford registration district volume 3b page 340. Her birth certificate should show which of the daughters is her mother.

Regards

David

Thanks very much David.

This is the first skeleton I've pulled out of the closet!

The only William Reynolds on the 1861 census for St Peter, Harrold, I could find was a 22 year old cordwainer living with his parents John and Elizabeth and 2 brothers, ag labs, RG9/987  Folio 13 Page 19

Maybe a cousin of your family...

Thanks, Catherine,

It could well be - the family seems to have stayed in Harrold for several generations.
