Martha Ann Shufflebotham or Angelina Mansell an orphan
« on: Saturday 18 February 12 20:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello all.   This is my very last hope.   Martha Ann Shufflebotham (DOB 28.10.1900) was orphaned aged 9 weeks and placed in Leek Union Workhouse. (1901 census)   She was adopted by John and Ann Jane Mansell of Bradeley Smallthorne.  (Workhouse records)   They gave her the name Angelina or Angelica Mansell.   I have traced the family to Gage Nebraska in 1907 and back to Smallthorne in 1915.   Angelina's adoptive mother died in 1925.   Angelina appeared as the informant on the death certificate.    Her adoptive father died in Tunstall in 1942, but this time there was no mention of her on the certificate.   I can find no trace of Angelina after the death certificate of the mother.  ie no marriage or death.   I did wonder if she had gone back to Nebraska.   The record Office there could not find a marriage and did not have death records.   I have run out of ideas and hope some one out there may be able to help.   She was related to me by birth and had such a tragic start I would love to find out what happened to her.     Good wishes to all.     Jeanette

She was not legally adopted so I wonder if she married under her birth name

Freebmd has 3 marriages in Staffordshire for a Martha A Shufflebotham - 1931/32/40

Hello Carolew.   Thanks for your reply.   I had thought of your suggestion, but doubted that she would know her real identity.   However if this post does not reveal any significant result I will follow up that line of enquiry....Thanks again for your interest.               Jeanette

Do you know if her adoptive father left a will? If there was such a document it may give a clue - perhaps a married name or location at the time it was drawn up. He died the year after the last year Ancestry has the probate calendars, but they are available at some record and probate offices. There is at least one RootsChatter who does lookups at the main office in London from time to time, so if you're not able to do so you could ask in the Common Room or just take a chance and place an order via the postal search service.
