Medway Union Workhouse
« on: Monday 20 February 12 22:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I have an ancestor, Eliza Stoneman nee Evenden (1871-1906) who at 9 years old, is listed a Scholar in the workhouse, with her two sisters, Elizabeth and Emma.

Although I have searched the internet for the workhouse, and found a website, I still haven't a clue what it would have been like for them there.
Their father died in 1878, and I'm guessing their mother also died before the 1881 census, as she isn't listed in the workhouse resident census.

Could anyone give me any more information?

Thank you,
Chris

If you are interested in tracing further information about an individual the records for Medway Union are held at Medway Archives at Strood. Admission & discharge registers etc can list what diet they were on, what clothes they were issued with, their health and may other bits of information.

Thank you CaroleW, thats the website I've been on, but for some reason hadn't found all the information like I did this time! :).

Thank you scintilla, it's great to find out about these places, because I would have never known they were there! I'm hopefully moving to Australia permanently this year, so actually visiting these places will become near impossible. Have you been before and what it is like there?

Yes, I have been and looked at some of my ancestors workhouse records. They are kept on microfilm and you can pick out the years you are interested in. It is best to contact the Archive before you go to book a microfilm reader so you won't be disappointed. They are very helpful there and will guide you through the process.

When we were children and misbehaved my mother would often threaten to put us in the workhouse. She would have been refering to the one in Magpie Hall Rd which had become All Saints Hospital.

Haha  :). Is it still a hospital to this date? I'm not familiar with the Medway area!
