ORTONA going to Australia
« on: Wednesday 22 February 12 07:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello, i am searching for information on a Samuel Stephen Balkam brn 1874 Poplar.

He was a Ships Fireman, i now have a photo of him on the ship Ortona,

After googling Ortona,it says the ship travelled to Australia 3 times in 1907.

I was wondering if Samuel actually travelled to Australia also or stayed in England.

His surname has been spelt so many different ways, Baukwine,Balkham,Balkam,Balcombe etc etc.

Can he be found on the Crew lists going to Australia?

Any help appreciated.....Tim

Hi Tim,
This site gives lists of mariners and ships in Australian Waters
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/

However sadly they have not yet transcribed much of 1907 and it does not include the Ortona.   But you can offer to help to transcribe them and be given access to the originals ...

I did try searching for the variations you mentioned without success.

regards,
   Ros

National Archives Australia hold some digitised records for "ORTONA", 1907 , it appears from looking at some that they do not list crew.
Also earlier and later arrivals.

Hi Tim,

When you ask if he travelled to Australia, do you mean in 1907? as he is in the 1911 Census living with his wife and children in Tilbury.

John

Hello John,
Yes Samuel was at home in 1911,this Samuel cannot be found in any other census, probably mistranscribed when young but maybe out of the country in 1891 and 1901,Samuel / Stephen was born 1874.

Not all the crew lists have been transcribed yet so maybe at a later time he will turn up!!!

Thanks  Tim

Hi Tim,

I have had a look at the manifests for the Ortona arriving Sydney on 19 April, 9 August and 29 November in 1907 and do not see him on the crew lists at all.  The handwriting is quite good and there are no possible variations of your surnames.

Sorry  ::)

Hi, I wondered if you found the answers you were looking for regarding the ortona. I’m trying to find some information on my great grandfather Andrew Scollay. I’ll I’ve found is he was on the ship in 1900
