Huges and Smith??
« on: Wednesday 22 February 12 11:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I am trying to find out more about my Peter (1854- Scotland) and Elizabeth Smith (1850 Llanasa) who as a family lived in Darfield Yorkshire

So i completed a search for Elizabeths born 1850 in Llanasa on the 1851-1871 census. I found a Elizabeth Huges on the 1861 Census living with her Family:

Thomas Hughes Head 37
Margret Hughes Wife 36
Joseph Hughes Son
Elizabeth Hughes 13
Henry Hughes 9
Thomas Hughes 7
David Hughes 4
Ann Hughes 2

Now what makes me think this is my Elizabeth is the names in the family Peter and elizabtehs children are:

Catherine A 1875
Joseph 1877
Margret 1879
David 1882
Elizabeth 1885
Mary Ann 1887

Quite a few of the names are the same??

How ever i can not seem to find a marraige for Elizabth Hughes and Peter Smith around the time of their fist daughters bitrth in 1875.

Can anyone see a obvious answer to who elizabeth Hughes married if not Peter Smith?

Thank you

Firstly Catherine Smith-could the census entry simply be a case of "lazy ditto-ing" and she was born in Darfield? There are entries for Catherine Smith in 1875 and 1876 under Barnsley which I think is the registration district for Darfield.
Can you identify Peter on the 1871 census to give a clue as to a possible location for an Elizabeth born Flintshire circa 1850,not necessarily a Hughes?
Given only one year of latitude on date I can find 23 Elizabeths born Llanasa civil parish 1849-1851 including 4 Elizabeth Hughes.
From a different perspective Peter Smiths married in Yorkshire near the time of the first born, have brides with surnames that match with Elizabeths born Flintshire(not necessarily Llanasa) in 1851 or 1852-Davison,Garrett and Taylor though I have to admit I can't really make any of them "fit" yet.
It would seem sensible to search for a connection with Peter Smith's whereabouts in 1871.
Regards
Roger

Hi Rodger,

I am unable to locate Peter of the 1871 census or any earlier, without the wife surname i am unable to find a marriage to find the fathers name to trace him back further.

There are to many Peter Smiths born the same date and Time as my Peter smith and without any other information other than born Scotland in 1950, wife Elizabeth and coal miner in Darfield 1881 untill his death in 1908 in a bit stuck  ???

Regards

Nichol
