adoptions in the early 1900s
« on: Wednesday 22 February 12 14:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I would be grateful as to any advice as to how adoptions were arranged  and facilitated in the early 1900s.  The ancestors [2 sisters aged two and four] were adopted from the Falls Road area to two separate families in England about 1906..I know that they were orphaned in 1908 following the death of their parents and another baby sister from TB, but the impression I was given was that they may have been sent to England slightly before that date.  The 1911 census has confirmed that they were adopted in the the North of England

Any advice would be much appreciated

many thanks

I don't think there was any formal procedure for adoption untill the late 1920's

Before then, it was probably arranged through word of mouth or similar

From Belfast to Newcastle does seem a long way tho -- possibly arranged through the Church maybe?

Adoption in Northern Ireland didn't start until 1931- see here. Prior to that date it was often an informal arrangement with relatives or friends looking after a child.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
