Coast Guard / Royal Navy 1840's Deal Kent
« on: Thursday 23 February 12 19:28 GMT (UK) »
I have a Samuel Goddard who was described as a Coast Guard living in West End Watch House Deal Kent in 1840. I'm told he would not have been local , where can I find out more about his record ?  Im also informed he was likely seconded from the Navy to this position. Cant find out anything in the usual places.
Thanks

I have a CG ancestor, admittedly a bit later on than yours, and his CG record is continuous with his Navy record. So don't look specifically for CG records.

A site you might like to browse for general background and photos. Although it focuses on Ireland, it's still the UK coastguard and wouldn't have been different anywhere else.

Do you know how old Samuel was in 1840?  And any idea of his rank?

I'm looking at the coastguard establishment books which can be downloaded (free of charge) from TNA, class ADM 175.  I've found a Lt William Henry Goddard, but not Samuel, in the index to nominations for appointments 1827-40.  This man was stationed at various places in the Deal area in the 1830s.

Samuel was born in 1808 and on the birth of his son Henry in 1840 he was living at the west end watch house. He left for NZ in 1841 not sure if he resigned or finished his "time" when he got to NZ he was involved with the "Deal Boats" although he doesnt appear to be one of the Deal Boatmen. His death cert states he was a man o wars man but hasnt let me anywhere.
Thanks

Am I right in thinking that you have established he was born in the Channel Islands?

If I can just pin him down in Deal in an establishment book, then tracking him backwards ought to be possible.  But I can't see him at the moment.  :(

Im open to the possibility that this could have been a relative his father on the death cert was Samuel also but because I have no other family info it may be that this William Henry Goddard may have been a favourite uncle who lived in the Coastguard accommodation and Samuel and family bunked up whilst en route to NZ .........coincidence that his son was named Henry at this time?
Was he still there in the 1840's ?

Lt Goddard seems to have resigned and was discharged from the service in Dec 1834.
