Just for interest Niknak, somebody else related to the same Townsend Thomson here on RC (see reply #13 on www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,513916.msg3703933.html#msg3703933

This post also picks up on the confusion surrounding the two Townsend Thomsons which has obviously confused researchers of these two lines. Suggestion there about the source of the name Townsend in the family line:

The Towsend name comes from her grandmother Townsend Dick married to James Thomson.

These chats are so interesting1 I have a copy of my Isabella's death certificate on which it states that her name at death was Isabella Thomson Matthew and her parents were James Miller & Euphemia Townsend. She was 77 yrs old when she died, which means she was born in 1860 or 1861 in Leslie, Fife. It looks like she married Alexander Matthew in Somerset East in South Africa. Alexander Matthew was born in Markinch in 1860. I am not sure my Isabella has anything to do with Townsend Thomson. I cant find any info on a James Miller married to a Euphemia Townsend on the IGI - its very frustrating!

So frustrating for you but I think there may be error on Isabella's parents' names as reported by informant to her death  :-\ Does happen and a pain when it does, particularly in this case, when she seems to have used a number of surnames for her registrations.

Not sure whether trying to source her marriage cert would help? Were parents' details included on these certs for the period when Isabella and Alexander married? Her marriage cert would at least include info that Isabella herself had given.

Everything is pointing to that birth that Ev found earlier. Location, year, and surnames that Isabella went on to use in later years in a number of combinations. The name given for her mother on her DC seems to be a combination of her grandmother and mother's first names:

Looking at the IGI -

Isabella Miller Thomson born 11th sept. 1860 Leslie Fife
mother Townsend Thomson
