David Mitchell & Elizabeth Fisher
« on: Friday 24 February 12 03:11 GMT (UK) »
I think these two people were my GGG grandparents. I think they had a daughter named Elizabeth who was born in 1826 who married Alexander Matthew born 15 May 1821. They lived in the Markinch area. Can anyone confirm this fact for me and tell me if there were any other family members?

Hi

If you do a parent search on www.familysearch.org  it gives 6 children in total to this couple.

To see any certificates or Banns at this time you would need to search www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

with the information from familysearch it should make it easier for you

Yours Aye

Just adding the link to previous post to avoid duplication in searches www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,496907.0.html

Nicknak, as Bruce mentions, Scotlands People will let you confirm Elizabeth's parents to let you work back with confidence. Given she married before the start of official registration in 1855, her death cert would be the best way to do this. You can view the image of her death registration online for a small fee.

How do I do a parent search on familysearch? The way i always search on familysearch is to browse by location and select british isles & then go down to scotland births or scotland marriages. What other way is there? I can find no david mitchell married to an elizabeth fisher at all.

Gets a little confusing now that there are a number of LDS/familysearch databases available and which can give you slightly different results sometimes :-\

IGI (International Genealogical Index) which is often mentioned is from the original search screen here www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

Not sure which you are using. There is also this link, which relates to the newer recently released site www.familysearch.org/#start

For Scotland, I find the IGI in general much more effective for me.

To do a parent search for Scotland on the IGI screen, just put in the full names (first and surnames) for father and mother on the right hand side. Then British Isles/Scotland. You normally get just one couple's children. If you feel you are getting to many results, you can add time filters and county options (take care with the county option as people did move around and you may miss some entries).

As always with IGI, check the 'message' section at the bottom of each entry to make sure that what you are looking at is actual extract from official statutory or old parish registers. This will be clearly stated. Alternatively, the entry may show as an LDS member submitted entry which you need to confirm elsewhere as these entries can be plain wrong and misleading.

There are lots of gaps in the pre 1855 Old Parish Registers unfortunately. Not all were well maintained or have survived the passage of time. Just because you haven't found an entry won't mean it didn't take place.

You have their children's birth and christening entries showing as actual extract from the OPRs. Their marriage looks to be at least before 1817 and the birth of the first child that shows on IGI (there may have been other earlier one that don't show on IGI).
