Frederick James Chapman 1881 census and 1891 please
« on: Friday 24 February 12 15:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

Frederick James Chapman was born in Dover registration district DEC 1877 Dover 2a 947.

I have located him in the 1911 census married and living in Birkinhead. His occupation is a stoker. I have located him on the new Merchant Seaman records released today as well. It is his early life I'm stuck on. I'm hoping to find him in the 1881 census and 1891 census records so I can see who his parents are and hopefully link him to my tree.

Anyone want to give this a go? ;D
Thanks panda

HI
I guess you know Frederick birth details because I suggest you send for his Birth Certificate.
On the 1871 census there are 2 Frederick J Chapmans Born Kent & on the 1881 there are 3
Info off Birth Cert should help identify the right one

Frederick James Chapman Dec q 1877 Dover 2a - 947

As Pughy suggests I think you will need to get the birth certificate

Thanks for your replies, I only found him today and located the possible birth on free BMD all other information comes from the two sources I gave in my original post. Frederick gives his date of birth in the merchant seamans records as 25/10/1878 Dover.
On the 1901 census his wife Bertha is residing with her parents and Frederick's brother Walter born 1879 Ireland in Cheshire. Ref 3390/61/18.
As I have only just located him I have not sent off for the certificate yet. I was hoping to find him in the census as a toddler with his parents to help confirm he was one of my Chapmans before spending some money on a long shot.

Thanks Casalguidi your a star
I think I had the wrong Bertha in 1901 census. Intresting that he is listed as being born at sea but there is a birth registration that might fit.
I think I might need to order the cert just to confirm the parents as he gives his initials as Fred J C on all other paperwork he is Frederic James no third name.
Thanks for your help

Not necessarily.  Check 1911 against 1901 ......... son Walter in 1911 so where is he in 1901?  Probably listed incorrectly as I mentioned.

I wouldn't worry about the extra "C" to be honest ............. perhaps the enumerator was going to write C(hapman) again?

If you have a subscription to Findmypast (am guessing you do) .............. check the army service records for Frederick James CHAPMAN and look to see if there's one for his father, Walter ........... just thinking that it might explain for all the movement around the world.

This is getting confusing to say the least
Frederick James Chapman married Bertha Coyne Liverpool Jul-Aug 1895 Lancs 8b

A Frederick James Chapman enlisted in the Cheshire regiment  15/11/1895 and gave his parents as next of kin and stated he was single ???

He served in Africa and at home
on the 1911 census he is listed with wife Bertha and 4 children he is listed as a stoker.

The merchant seaman records are dated from 1918-1921. He gives his wife Bertha as next of kin.

On the army records he is listed as 5ft 3inches with grey eyes
On the merchant seaman records he is listed as 5ft 5inches with blue eyes

The only Frederick James chapman registered in Dover was born in 1877 not 1878 so did he get his year of birth mixed up?
The only Bertha Chapman I could find in the 1901 census is married to a Walter J Chapman born in Ireland and living with her parents who have the surname Brown.
