Cotterill family, 1871 Census or later.
« on: Friday 24 February 12 15:04 GMT (UK) »
On the 1861 (RG9 1923 7 8) there's a family that are headed by Elizabeth Cotterill, age 30, married, her 3 yo daughter Elizabeth Ann, plus two boarders Thomas Lear and Charles Nixon and a visitor Hannah A?s - everyone born Kidsgrove Staffs.

From Elizabeth Anne's birth in 1857 her mother's maiden name was Lear & there was a marriage in 1855 at St Thomas, Kidsgrove between Thomas Cotterill and Elizabeth Lear. What I'm really looking for is Thomas Cotterill's age & place of birth.

I've not been able to find either Elizabeth in 1871 or 1881 - can anyone spot them please?

There is a death of an Elizabeth Cotterill March 1881 Wolstanton aged 49

Also rather interestingly there is an Elizabeth Engledew/Angeldew? with daughter Elizabeth b 1857 both born Kidsgrove with a Joseph Angeldew in Thornaby Yorkshire RG10/4900/67/36

Hannahs surname name on the 1861 is Ankers

Thank you Willow,
 - I don't think the West Brom lot is them with the variety of birthplaces from a different area of Staffs. The Thornaby group look intriguing, I'll investigate further. Thanks for the ideas.

Have you any idea who Elizabeth Ann married? might be another route to try because depending on the date/place she married it might tie them down a bit more

Willow - thanks for coming back to the thread. I've no idea about the Cotterills further foward - I'd best explain:

My gut feeling is that Thomas Cotterill is related to Charles Nixon (who was the one I was following) as Charles' mother's maiden name was Cotterill (or variant). When I saw the surname of the family Charles was with I wondered what connection, if any, there was. I've researched all the Nixon siblings (one being my direct ancestor) as far as I can with some really eccentric transcriptions in there. I've "done" the Nixon parents, but not as yet looked for/at their siblings, so if Thomas was an uncle to Charles it would start that generation off.

Thanks for the offer Willow, if I have difficulties with them I'll come back - at the moment I'm working through the later generation across my tree, before I go one further back, so I'll leave this for the time being - thanks though for the searches.
