Grants in Millbrook
« on: Friday 24 February 12 15:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone offer some suggestions for sources of information or areas of research which might enable me to find out more about my 3 x great grandfather James Grant?

The main things I know about him are as follows:

He was born in Ireland - location unknown - in around 1776;
He married Ann - surname not known but born in Hants some time around 1765;
Their son William was born in Millbrook in 1799;
Five other children were born in Millbrook between 1803 and 1814;
James was an agricultural labourer;
He lived in Millbrook for most of the rest of his life but died in 1858 whilst living in Coburg St, Northam;
Ann died in 1844, aged 79.

I'm interested in any clues as to what circumstances might have led to him coming to Southampton and settling in Millbrook: eg, maritime trade between So'ton and Ireland; work as a navvy on canal construction; war with France - was he in the Militia?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

colg  :)
