Mount Street, Newington/Walworth
« on: Friday 24 February 12 22:34 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know exactly where Mount Street was in the Newington/Walworth area of Southwark.  I know it was near to the Walworth Road but that's as much as I know.  I have a book showing the entire street maps of London in 1939 but the street has obviously gone by that time as it is not listed.  I have census records from 1881 showing family members living there.

On the 1871 census the enumerator walked Horsley Street next Westmoreland Street- Lower Mount Street -then Mount Street.

It was in the parish of St.Peters Church. If you look at Westmoreland Street on todays map it is near St.Peters Church.

When Booth walked the area he said that there seemed to be a lot of Costermongers and that Mount Street was not as poor as Lower Mount Street.

There would have been lots of costermongers living and working in the area:

2 street markets in very close proximity

1:  East Street (aka The Lane or East Lane)
2:  Westmorland Road

and not more than a 15 minute walk away (if you walk fast that is)

The Cut & Lower Marsh - the same market but split by Waterloo Road.
