Richard Palmer & Sophia Stanton
« on: Monday 27 February 12 14:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi
We have found the marriage on 5 Feb 1818 of Richard Palmer to Sophia Drew not as we thought Sophia Stanton
I am trying to find the marriage of Sophia Stanton born 1794 to Richard Palmer born 1788 I have found 6 of their children starting with Richard Drew Palmer born 1819 Tilehurst,Berkshire but they may have had other children before this,I just cannot find their marriage or Richards parents marriage they were Richard Palmer born1772 who married Martha Drew born 1776.
Any help would be welcombe we have been told that they were Quaker folks not sure if this is why I cannot find any marriages for them,we have also been told that they are thought to be related to the Huntley & Palmer biscuit family.
Kind regards Christine

Christine,

I'm not sure how these fit in but there are the following marriage on the Berks FHS Marriage CD:

Shinfield 5 Feb 1818  Richard Palmer & Sophia Drew. (Shinfield is only a few miles from Tilehurst)

Reading St Giles 21 Oct 1790 James Drew & Martha Stanton.

I couldn't find either of the marriages you mentioned on the CD.

The biscuit Palmers were certainly Quakers (until they got too rich for Quakerdom to be comfortable). I had thought they came to Reading from the west country in 1840ish, but I could well be wrong. Still, I'm not so sure that a Palmer from Tilehurst in the 1770s would have much of a link to the biscuit Palmers.

Hello Bolton,
According to the Berks Fhs Tilehurst PRs cd Richard Palmer was a butcher and at least up to 1832 when his dau 5th child Sarah Emma was baptised, lived at Theale. This is according to the baptisms of 5 children at Tilehurst St Michaels.

He and Sophia had a further  child baptised at Theale, Holy Trinity  in 1835 and Richard was buried there in 1847 age 48 (b1799) and Sophia in 1839 age 44.(b1795) From Berkshire Fhs Theale fiche. These ages do not match yours although I appreciate that burials are not always accurate.

They do, however, closely match the baptism of a Richard Palmer at Tilehurst in 1798,  first born son of Richard and Amy.
The death certs (Freebmd below) may tell you more.
Deaths Mar 1839 Palmer  Sophia    Bradfield  6 102
Deaths Sep 1847 Palmer  Richard     Reading  6 160

As your firstborn of Richard and Sophia bap Feb 7 1819 had a middle name of Drew, I would suggest that maybe the marriage that Jillruss found is the right one.

Yours

Hello

I think we're interested in the same family.

My connection is to Ellen Palmer who came out to Australia in 1856 and married Thomas Mossman in 1857.  The marriage certificate lists her parents as Richard Palmer (butcher) and Sophia Drew.  Her immigration records give her native place as Theale.  She died in Sydney in 1927 at the age of 91.

We haven't yet been able to find her baptism but from the info we have we think she was born 1835-36.

Vicwinann, I was wondering whether you could please confirm that the child baptised in 1835 in Theale was Ellen? Also whether you have the exact dates for this baptism and the burials of her parents?

Although I seem to have found Richard Palmer living in Theale with some of his children in the 1841 census, I can't find Ellen (who I assume would have been 4 or 5). Could anyone offer any suggestions?

Christine (Bolton), I'm not sure of your exact interest, but if you would like Ellen's marriage and death certificates let me know and I can email them to you. Of course the same applies to anyone else who is interested.

Thanks
Deborah

Hello Deborah,
This is not my family but I am happy to help. The child christened on Jan 21 1835 was, indeed, Ellen Palmer.
Richard, her father, was buried 20 Aug 1847 age 48, 8 years after her mother Sophia on 5th March 1839
All at Theale Holy Trinity.
Until 1832 Theale was a tithing of Tilehurst, so anything earlier than that will be in the Tilehurst registers.
Yours
Vicwinann

There are a couple of Ellen Palmers of the right age living with other Families in the 1841 Census.
As Richard was Widowed 1839 he might have had others look after Ellen.
1 age 5 living in St Giles with the Williams.
1 age 6 with the Hollis Family in Sonning. Lots of people in this Household. Also a George Palmer age 5.

Thank you for that extra information, it's much appreciated.

The Ellen Palmer in St Giles in 1841 seems to be the one.  She's living with William Dredge (they'd put his name around the wrong way) and presumably his wife Sarah. I found an 1838 marriage for William Dredge and Sarah Drew Wallin - "Drew" being a tempting lead. On familysearch I found a baptism for Sarah Drew Wallin in 1817 in Tilehurst to parents John Wallin & Sarah. There was a marriage of John Wallen to a Sarah Drew in 1815 in Shinfield (same place as Richard Palmer & Sophia Drew). There were also baptisms for Sarah Drew in 1792 and Sophia Drew in 1794 in Shinfield to parents James & Martha Drew, so it looks like a link between families has been established.

Thanks very much.
Deborah

Hello again

I'm wondering whether I could get a little further help please.

The baptism of Richard Palmer in Tilehurst 1798 to parents Richard and Amy sounds like a really good bet. I was wondering if there was a marriage for Richard Palmer to Amy ....? Or any burial info for either of them.

Also, whether there's any burial information for either James Drew or Martha Drew (nee Stanton)? I could find her in the 1841 census living in Tilehurst but no mention after that.

Thanks
Deborah
