Thomas Hicks ofBicester
« on: Monday 27 February 12 17:25 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Hicks, my 4th x great grandfather,  married Elizabeth King in Bicester in 1784. I would like to know more about him! I have found  two references in a Directory for Bicester in 1791:

Hicks, Henry, Butcher
Hicks, Thomas, taylor & Parish Clerk.

I also found a reference, in a book on 17th & 18th Century Bicester, to a Hicks, E, who at his death (I presume - the information was collected from wills) had a house with four rooms in 1727.
I would love to be able to link these people together, if they do indeed belong to the same family.

Can anyone help, please?

Hi
At risk of stating the obvious and please accept my apologies if you have done this but it may help.....

Have you tried the Oxfordshire Records Office in 'St Lukes' Cowley Oxford and also the Oxfordshire Family History Society?

At St Lukes it is possible you will find Hearth and Window tax records for properties, some deeds and wills in which you may find reference to your families.
I can't remember the dates off hand when the various taxation classes were introduced or became defunct - google will tell you that. Call either one of the above for some very helpful and certainly professional help I reckon if you haven't all ready?

Thank you for your suggestions. Silly really, but because I live in France, I tend to rely totally on the internet for my sources - but I am sure I can still follow your advice on line. I would so love to go rooting myself in the archives, but as you can imagine it's a tad difficult from here! I really like this site because it puts me in touch with people who can do just that, and who are really good at it.  :D
Thank you for your help. I shall follow it up today.

Hi Sue

Well let me know if you think either place have any info you need a look taking at.
The OFHS have a great on line resource and for a small charge they offer a look up service.

The Oxford Archives at St Lukes - well I am in there about once a month and may be able to look some thing up  - but others who use this great site are in there more frequently so I am sure there are ways around your being in France.

Good luck
