Qestions about Ancestry.co.uk
« on: Sunday 15 May 05 13:32 BST (UK) »
Have been using the weekly credit system on Ancestry which runs out today. I have been considering whether it would be cheaper in the long run to take out a subscription. I searched on Rootschat and have read the mixed comments from members about membership, but still have queries unanswered. So could anyone answer them for me please?

1. Does the annual membership give you access to more databases than the quarterly subscription, if so what are they?

2.Why when you have a weekly subsciption and credits in hand are you asked to buy more credits if you look on anything but the census or BMDs.

3. Are Ancestry's BMDs the official ones as so many records I know should be there are missing.

Being a pensioner, I have to take into account any money I spend and wonder if I will find any advantage to taking out a subscription.

It really depends what you want to use ancestry for Nessie. Ancestry.co.uk take thie BMD records from
http://www.freebmd.rootsweb.com/

which you can access for free.
I myself am a member (I joined through a special offer they ran) but I can only access the uk collection. I joined only to access the census info as I have found that most of there uk records are availiable elsewhere on the web for free.

Hope this helps,
Sarah

Thanks Sarah, I have searched the census on Ancestry as far as I need at the present time. Unless I can trace the maternal line back to Ireland and Scotland I am at a full stop at the moment

Nessie,
Have you tried posting on the relevant sites on Rootschat?

It's amazing how many folk are only too willing to do look ups for you, absolutely free !  I'm sure there will be someone who will be able to help you out.

Hope you are successful.

Love

Yes I have had help from members on Rootschat, but they have ended up at the same brick wall. Both of the gg grandparents have very common names and when you only have a country as place of birth it is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Poor old you.

Lloydy and I are both looking for Jones's, so I know what you are up against.

Sorry I can't help you with Ancestry I'm not a subscriber.

Keep trying, hopefully you will come across someone who will be able to help you.

Good luck
