Benjamin & Mary Ashton
« on: Wednesday 29 February 12 14:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to identify the deaths of Benjamin and Mary Ashton who in 1841 were living in Walley Street, Manchester.  They were both recorded as 50 years old. Ref HO107/577/20-23.  Benjamin's occupation was a glazier.

I have got a couple of possibles which were both registered in the Market Street sub-district according to LancsBMD:-

Benjamin Ashton (aged 74 according to LancsBMD)
3rd qtr 1854 Manchester 20 207

Mary Ashton (aged 53 according to LancsBMD)
3rd qtr 1842 Manchester 20 404

Can anyone see any alternatives and would Walley Street come under the Market Street registration district?  Just want to try and make sure I have the best chance of ordering the correct certificates.

Thanks.

Luzzu

Hi,

Thanks for your reply  :).

Just done some searching on the 1851 death and I am fairly certain he died in Prestwich Asylum, aged 33.  He is on the census and then he was buried on 13 Sep 1851 at Prestwich St Mary.  So I can definitely rule him out.

The other one you mentioned is the one in my original post but there was a typing mistake on the reference (sorry  :-\) which I have now corrected.

Its looking like the 1854 one is the best option.  Shame I can't find him on the 1851 census.

Hi Luzzu  :)

I am fairly sure Whalley Street was in Ancoats unless there was another  :-\   I noticed on the 1841 it is written Walley Street on one side of the page and Whalley on the other.

I think so too Mo.

The 'front page' of that census book puts Walley St in Ancoats, which had its own sub-registration district.

Can't find Walley St or Whalley St on any maps but a directory has the street next door, Tavery St, near Great Ancoats St. So not much help with the Market St location I'm afraid

Hi.

Yes definitely in Ancoats.  Found Whalley Street on the 1851 and it says the sub-district is Ancoats, parish of St Judes.  Good news for my death references is that I've been up and down Whalley Street and there are no Ashtons so they must have moved.
