Mary MUMBY help needed
« on: Thursday 01 March 12 22:59 GMT (UK) »
Am totally stuck with Mary MUMBY. I do not know her age, where she was born or died.

She married Abraham Wallett 1744 - 1790 at LUTTON 12th Feb 1765.
He was vicar at CLARE, Suffolk and is buried there.

Before going to Clare, Abraham was rector at Somersby and Enderby.

Abraham was born Gedney to James Wallet and Ann Thacker, Long Sutton
BUT just cannot find any clues for MARY MUMBY

can anyone help locate my ggggg granny Mary Mumby's birth and parents?  ;D

fingers and toes crossed
Hilary

Without anything much to go on there is a Mary Mumby on the IGI ch. 11.2.1746 Wisbeach St Peter, Cambridge.

Parents William Mumby and Mary.

My only reasoning for this is Cambridge is the next county to Suffolk

There are a couple of possibles born in Lincoln which is much further away.

I had just found the Lincstothepast image when Geoff replied. I notice that she is recorded as Momby and signs her name that way.

There are no Mumby witnesses but Lincolnshire Archives have a copy of the licence bond and allegation, which might have more information. The reference is MB 1765/460

Thanks so much for the link to Licspast. I had already found the site but just couldn't get any results! Have just tried again and still doesn't bring anything up putting in mary nor abraham. I tried Lutton and bought up page saying to view at Lincs archives office.

What am I doing wrong?

Am sure somewhere I had seen an Elizabeth Mumby as a witness to a marriage that was either in Lutton or Somersby but cannot find it again! Must be going crackers. Thought the Elizabeth may have been related to Mary.

Plus the marriage record for Abraham and Mary - I can make out one witness as John Harrison? but cannot make out other name - any ideas?

thank you all for taking the time to help me!
Hilary

I can't make out the first name but John Harrison appears on several other marriages and is probably connected to the church, rather than the family.

There was an Elizabeth Mumby born in the adjacent village of Long Sutton in 1789. She was the daughter of Richard Mumby and Ann Russell. Richard was from West Ashby, near Horncastle.

see http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayTranscript.aspx?oid=558338&iid=244023

The marriage bond usually has the name of a the bride's father, if still alive, or a close relative. It might be worth getting hold of a copy of the one for Mary, although it can take some time. You would need to contact Lincolnshire Archives - http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/residents/archives/about/contact-information/72378.article

They will let you know how much it will cost etc.

David

Thanks all for steering me in direction of Lincolnshire archives - I contacted them and they have sent me a form to fill in which I have to return by post with cheque for £3.50. Good value!

Could I just double check though......
David are the bonds searchable on the licolnshire site? I have spent a good hour trying all sorts of links and can't find any index records that can search??

I don't think so.  :-\

Their will index 1701-1800 can be accessed though. http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/residents/archives/family-history/family-history-sources-at-lincolnshire-archives/

Hi Hilary,

The only searchable index is on Findmypast but combined with general marriages. I have just taken out a subscription, mainly because they have images of Cheshire parish records. You can search the index for free but you can't see the full details - e.g. the bond reference and spouse.

However, there is a clue in the results. If there are two marriages listed, and one has a birth date, that is the marriage bond. This is the one that I have just sent for and the one for Mary Momby. Unfortunately, you need to pay for some credits to get the details and Mary has no birth date, in which case, you might need to look at both, although the bond is usually the first one.

WILKINSON Charles 1764 1737 Spalding Lincolnshire
WILKINSON Charles 1764          Spalding Lincolnshire

MOMBY Mary 1765        Lutton Lincolnshire

WALLETT   Charlotte 1801 1780 Sutton - to Robert Lindley
WALLETT   Edward 1802 1776 Holbeach - to Mary Paxton
WALLETT   Elizabeth 1802 1783 Sutton St Mary - to Thomas Garner

Quite a lot of Mumbys, including:-

MUMBY Elizabeth 1837 1818 Sutton St Mary - to John Sturgess
