Help with an occupation please -1861
« on: Saturday 03 March 12 15:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello to all,
I am researching my ancestors in Flintshire and looking at the 1861 Census my GGG Granfather's occupation is documented as 'Panner'. He was residing then in Lane End in Mold. His son's occupation is documented as a 'Brick Maker'. Would there be a connection between these two occupation. I suspect that brick works were near by.

Can anyone please help me in identifying this occupation.

Regards whiteKat

If you give us a name in 1861 we'll give you an opinion.

Hi all,
Thank you both for your responses. Shep I am very grateful for the web sites you identified - I will enjoy researching them.

My GGG Grandfather's name was Edward Peters born around 1800 and his wife Mary. The son's name is George - the brickmaker.

I have re-looked at the transcription on FindMyPast and the transcriber has transcribed 'pauper' to what I read 'panner' as . However on viewing the Register entry closely myself no way-  from my point of view could the transcription be 'pauper'. I would value your opinion. Also the transcriber has documented the last name as 'Peter' when to me it clearly reads 'Peters'.

1861 Census reference: RG09 piece 4275 folio 57 page 24

Thank you
Kate

Hi

Could it be Pannier - as in a carrier - maybe carried the bricks or raw materials from one part of the works to the other.

I've also seen a pannier described as a fish merchant but I'm not sure in this case. What was he in the 1851?*

*added - I see he was a collier

He's also a pannier or whatever it is in 1871 but this time it looks more like farmer  ???

Added - snip

also -the first letter in 1861 does look like the neighbour Mr Fisher (butcher) rather than the P in Peters  :-\

On A******y in 1851 he's a Collier living in Buckley Road in Bistre (now part of Buckley) next door to the Duke of York pub. (They've also transcribed his surname as 'PETTERS' if you search for it).

Incidentally, Argoed (where he was born) is an area directly inbetween Mold and Buckley.
It's about 1 mile away from where I live! I do have a book on the Brickworks of North Wales but can I find it - no!

I'm not sure what 1871 is

But think 1861 occupation is "Runner"
The first letter is not like the "P" in Peters
1851 Edward is a collier- so Runner could fit with a mining occupation

Runner = one who pushes mine wagons (into pit cage etc)

thanks Shep - I found it and amended my posting. I'm not sure if you've seen my previous two postings!

i think it looks more like Farmer on the 1861 and 1871 than anything else.
